I own an early version of the Class A Boost.
Mine has no gain control, just vol and tone. Comes housed in a grey junction box! battery or plug in power... What a boost! It is silent -- dead friggin' silent. Seems utterly transparent -- the most transparent I have yet encountered. I use the CAB at the beginning or the end of my chain, depending on how me and my SHO are acting together! Clean into a Fender DR, as an OD, yeilds a fat tho not flabby OD. Real tubey sounding. Great, warm break-up tone. More round than edgy, more bluesy than gainy. refined. Clean into a Gibson GA15-RV (class A, el84) yeilds more 'feathery' break up with notable 'tails' on the OD. Nice, real nice. very sparkly -- think Vox shimmer. Throw in a SHO and you are in AC30 turf, semi-cranked. Great tone results. A Musician's headturner tone... Drives a pedal chain easily. Interacts well with distortion/fuzz boxes and other ODs. the controls' sweep are versatile and useful. for folks looking for a vol. boost, or an outright OD that isn't over the top 'distortion', then the Pharaoh Class A Boost is a genuine contender. I would think the added gain control of the newer models takes this pedal to the 'edgier' side where mine can't go, thus making it one of the best boost/ODs avaliable. reasonably priced too... The Pharaoh guy makes great stuff, no friggin doubt... (btw, I will never sell this pedal.) [This message was edited by Big Star on May 30, 2003 at 12:17 PM.] |

A agree-what a keeper! The class A is the best boutique pedal I have ever owned.

I own a "Tone Engine" that I love. I'm not even exactly sure what it does. I think it's a class A germanium boost. It really sounds great with Fender bridge pickups and has been just the thing needed when using less than adequate rental gear and even a couple of studio's amps. Definitely worth the $99.00 I paid for it.
