I just ordered myself a nice Christmas present from Toyz. The Dave Smith Evolver. I am not a keyboard player per se, but I did build a couple of patchbay synths way back in the late '70's. I just loved the sounds I could create with them.
After seeing the Evolver advertised on this site, I just had to get one. I'll post a review as soon as I've had a chance to put the thing through its paces. I am a guitar player by trade and really intend to use this as a guitar processor on my pedalboard for the most part. Should prove interesting. Will be back with more in a couple of weeks. I've had the Evolver about a week now. Very cool instrument. Anyone who love's old synth tones would appreciate this. It's a very complex unit. Needless to say, I've got quite a bit of experimentation ahead. So far, I love the thing. It can be used as an audio processor as well as a stand-alone synth. Anyone who's interested should definitely check out www.davesmithinstruments.com and get the lowdown.
This unit is, to start with, an analog and digital polyvoice monophonic synth with a 4 track/16 step sequencer in-a-box. Pretty easy to figure out how to use for anyone who already has a good working knowledge of how sythesizers work. Very complex patches can be achieved with some work. Reading through the manual is a must. It is very similar to a big old patch-bay synth, without the cables, and with state-of-the-art circuitry. Check out the DSI Evolver user's group on Yahoo for more. Mesadude |
