AC Booster
Well it probably won't be mentioned as often as the Menatones, Fulltones, and whatchamatones out there...but this is one sweet boost/overdrive pedal. If I had to compare it with anything sonically to give you a start on what it sounds like - think Vox vintage or Menatone Tob Boost In A Can. I am using the AC mostly as my "base" overdrive because it is just so organic, warm and tubey sounding. It has a real complex harmonic overtone nature to it that is hard to beat - rivals the TBIAC. Knobs - Gain, Volume, Treble and Bass. This pedal is capable of being soley a boost pedal, but it is not completely clean if you want that sort of thing. The distortion it produces lends itself to mostly vintage overdriven vox tones, indie rock, blues and heavier jazz sounds. No high gain rock stuff...other pedals do that better. Retains the sound of your guitar very well, but adds such warmth to the overdrive...I can't say enough about how well this thing is voiced. There are good sounds no matter how you fiddle the knobs. I have the bass up to around 3 oclock and the treble around 2 oclock for my Vox amp sound. The TBIAC as I remember packs alot of vibey mojo and is very amp like...maybe moreso than the AC, but I think the AC cuts through a mix much better and doesn't get quite as mushy as the TBIAC. I think its a more usable pedal. I can't see how this pedal won't catch on. The Prosound site says its handwired, but it does have the components mounted to a PC board. Doesn't matter. The AC replaced my Hot Cake as main overdrive. The Hot Cake now does a "dirty boost" thing and gooses the AC nicely. I have other pedals for the high gain stuff. I can't believe my luck that I found this one used. If you are looking for something 180 degrees different from a tubescreamer, you oughta give the AC a look. blah blah blah |

Thanks for the review. Have you considered complimenting the AC Booster with the RC Booster?? ~John II |

I may try that, but not any time soon. I am sure the two were designed to be pretty sweet together.
The ProSound Communications website has a little video clip of Tim Pierce (I don't know who this is) demoing the AC and offering his thoughts as to how it compares to other pedals. Not the most in depth, and yes, its corporate marketing flash...but its interesting nonetheless. "Fat, drunk and stupid is no way to go through life, son..." |
