I keep hearing great things about the newest version of the Menatone King Of The Britains with the Mid knob. Guitar Player recently did a review, but didn't exactly rave. I already use the Hotcake (3 knob version) Tonebone Classic and Hot British. I love all these for hi-gain stuff. I also have others like an '86 RAT, Jekyll & Hyde, Line 6 DM4. Do I really NEED the KOB? I'd like to hear from others out there (pro or con) who use it.

I can't speak for the newer version but I did have an older version of the KOB and it sounded as advertised, Plexi in a box.
To answer your question, if you feel you NEED a Plexi sound and can't afford an old Marshall head and cabinet, this'll do the job very well. I ran that pedal into a Hot Rod Deville and it made the amp sound like an old Plexi with a closed back 4x12 cabinet with old Celestions.

Hi , I also had the old version of the King of the Britains (no led) 4 knobs. .It didn't sound anything like a Plexi to my ears. I've never heard a plexi have anywhere near as much gain as this pedal, plus the pedal was rather bright. Oh well, we all have different opinions and an opinion is valid, so the only way you'll find out is to try it yourself

Though Eric's and my opinions differ, he does have a valid point that I did forget to mention (I sold the pedal late last year - so I did forget some setup details - Thanks for jogging my memory Eric!). I got my sound keeping the gain knob very low, the master volume high (sometimes all the way up) and the treble very low. The bass knob I think I had somewhere in the middle or the range.
With the gain knob turned up, the pedal begins to emulate a modern high-gain amp and loses that Plexi charm.

For me the " Blue Collar " gets closer to the cranked Marshall thing - precisely because it has LESS gain ... through a clean Fender style amp that is .
