My setup:
60's strat w/kinman avn blues>Teese RMC3 wah>Eh Qtron>Hotcake>Fulldrive2tr100>maxon compressor>Fulltone Fat Boost>Sweet Sounds Ultravibe>Boomerang Phrase Sampler Hi Willis..How do you like your Maxon Compressor? Is it the new reissue? I was wondering if you ever tried it against the MXR Dynacomp? Need your comment 'cause I'm planning on getting one...peace |

I like the Maxon Compressor a lot, the dynacomp was too squashed and seemed to change my tone in a bad way, I tried both vintage and reissue dynacomps. The maxon is the most musical pedal compressor I've used.

Yeah, as far as gear goes, more is not better; but I'm still a gearwhore nonetheless. You can take a mediocre guitarist through primo gear and he will still won't sound anything as good as a great guitarist playing through the worst gear in the world. BUT, most great guitarists (not many of these.....hmmmm, 2 maybe)I know play through good stuff. It just boils down to the fact that it really wouldn't make a world of difference either way, it's all in the fingers.....BUt it sure as hell doesn't hurt.

I agree it's all in the fingers, and not to sound arrogant but people have tried to play my setup and ask "How do I make it sound good?"
I'm not saying that I'm the best guitarist in the world, but it does go to show that you can't just have all this stuff to sound good, there's more to it than that. Music should be about emotion and feeling, pedals give us a broader pallete to paint from. Sorry for the wierd reply. |

I wonder if Elmore James, John Lee Hooker and Muddy Waters used to argue about tone and gear? Somehow I get the feeling they didn't. I read a bio on Magic Sam that said he was in and out of debt so much that often times he would show up to gigs and have to borrow a guitar and amp from whoever else was there or from the house if they had one. As for me, I'm as bad as anybody. I drag my stuff with me everywhere like a security blanket, but I think it is just that. Talent comes through any set up.

It took me a while to realize that one's sound is 90% you and 10% gear. This after tons of money spent. But after I got my chops down, I realized what gear was good; the stuff that is bare bones, no effects loops, just one channel, great tone. Essentially, a naked tone. I think a lot of times guitarists use effects in the wrong way, to cover up bad playing, not expand their sound pallete. Now, I'm not gonna be a poseur, I've got a Marshall JCM2000 with 3 channels, effects loops, all that garbage, but I find myself using it less and less the better I get.
