I was thinking about trying to install a plug connector to make changing pickups in certain guitars easier.

By that I mean that there would be a lead coming from the the volume control which would have say the socket part of the plug on it and the lead coming from the pickup would have the actual plug on it.

This would mean that to change pickups I would just have to solder a new plug to the end of the cable on the new pickup and I am ready to go.

Now, do any of you have any experience with anything like this. I would obviously need a connector plug that was capable of carrying the live and the ground separately.

What kind of connector would your recommend or it there some reason why it would not work?

I did that myself in the past and was using wiring similar to what you see used for stereo headphones, the mini plugs like used on ipod headphones are great for that small and works good.

It could be simpler still, like the contacts on a 9V battery (for those that press the battery against the contacts, no clip-on thing) Or maybe something like the adapter for a Macbook? If the modules fit nicely it would work fine.

I think I'll go with 3.5 mm (1/8 inch) headphone jack/jack socket. Considering the hassle that is involved in changing pickups on some hollowbody guitars I am surprised that more people don't do this.

Nice idea... you could have teh contact point in the pickup cavity with something flat like this.
