Old news. Actually the story I heard was the keyboard part was played back in the wrong key.

So many pedals, so little time...

I'm always late on this stuff. Mad

I know I've started off songs in the wrong key before, so I feel anyone's pain when this happens. Even the big guys.

It, believe it or not, is either a hoax or an odd aftereffect of the audio recording device itself (cell phone). Because I have heard the boot of that very show (as have many, many others) and it is not out of tune at all. Folks who were actually at the show also state that the song and all parts were perfectly in-tune, not like this cellphone video.

And berserk... are you serious? That's Diamond Dave. And he's doing a killer job.

Interesting. In the notes from one of the bootlegs I found online, the person comments that Eddie must have grabbed the wrong guitar, because the song sounded really bad. It sounded like he was at the show and not just going from the bootleg.

Oh,I am serious,I think Dave became a clown after the second album. I always wanted to hear this great guitar album from Eddie ,but it never happened ,as far as I know. Van Halen is very boring to me.

What the shit is that guy doing with the karate stick in the middle of the tune? All that was wrong with 80's metal compacted into one Ninja Turtles moment. Le painful.

I'm not questioning your opinion of Roth, just if you seriously didn't know it was him when you said, "Who is that singer ?,he's horrible.". He certainly is a bit of a parody of himself at this point, but there wasn't really anything particularly wrong with his singing, was there?

And about the boot Blues Lyne - I asked for an mp3 of 'Jump' from that show from a trader last night. Will post as soon as I get it and we can all give a listen and see if it's a trainwreck!

Remember the video for Panama? Or seeing VH in concert? It's a bit embarrassing to see him doing that now, but then again, I saw 'Fat Yngwie' in leather pants doing high kicks with his gut spilling over the waistline a few years back. Regardless, it's pure VH and that's what Dave is probably trying to bring to the audience.

I read somewhere that the issue was a keyboard sample bit depth problem. Something along the lines of "He recorded the keyboards at 48kHZ but they got played back at 44.1kHZ", or some such. If you try this at home by recording at 48kHZ and playing back at 44.1kHZ, you end up about one semitone flat. It's plausible.

Got the mp3 of Jump from Greensboro... here it is. Not the greatest quality, and Eddie is a little flat, but not the trainwreck in the YouTube video!

MY ears are not very musically fit...

Not to address the technical considerations within in the thread, but most everybody sucks now and then. The good ones suck for maybe a few seconds at best, and that's it, which is why they're pros.

I remember seeing a television performance which featured David Grissom playing guitar with John Cougar Mellencamp years ago. I forget which tune it was, but David launched into the first phrase loud and proud and with conviction - half a step flat. Obviously, it was a dots/fretboard thing (none of US have ever done that...!) Anyway, he didn't bat an eye or sweat it, he got a handle on it extremely quickly, and proceeded to destroy the rest of the ride in no uncertain terms.

Right; I saw something similar in the late '70's or early 80's. The grand finale of a show was an all star band playing a blues number, and each of 6 or 8 guitarists taking a solo. When it was his turn, Neal Schon launched off into a very impressive effort, played entirely a half step flat. About half way through the solo, B. B. King, standing next to him, glanced at him with a priceless expression, but Neal was lost in the moment and didn't notice.
