At 8:35 some friends in the band Thunderbolt came to my house saying "Man our guitarsist cheesed on us tonight can you gig tonight" I grabbed my Strat and off we went. Turned out to be a good jam and a good sized crowd. The last 3 songs were : "Tuesday's Gone", "Black Magic Woman Woman" and the finale was "Down By The River" done Roy Buchanan style, all 3 songs I did absolutely burning solos and we did 10 minute versions of each. Man I love a great jam.

I love getting calls like that and getting out there at a moments notice. I'm glad it worked out.

I had one of those last night, too. I usually don't take mid-week calls; I teach on Monday & Tuesday evenings, play a single on Thursdays and gig with the band on Friday and Saturday, so Wednesday is usually my night off. But my band has the rare Friday off this weekend, so when I got a call to play a casino in New Orleans, I went for it.
Man, New Orleans is such a great town to play music in. There are so many great musicians here. For sheer numbers of wonderful players, this place is on a par with any of the great musician cities (New York, Boston, L.A., Nashville, etc.). This particular band consists of a drummer and a female singer and whomever they bring in on any particular gig. Last night, that included a bass player, me, and another guitar player. Since I play guitar and keys, I always set up a keyboard as part of my rig. Well, the other guitar player also played keys, so we traded off all night. The thing about the working players in New Orleans is that you can't stump them. We faked our way through spot-on versions of "Kid Charlemagne" and "Peg", as well as a bunch of Earth, Wind & Fire/Stevie Wonder kind of funky stuff. Near the end of the night, I sang the Eagles' "I Can't Tell You Why" (I have this high, little-white-boy voice that sounds like the love child of David Gates and Timothy B. Schmitd). Afterwards, I was, er... approached by this gorgeous brunette with big doe eyes and huge "tracts of land." Apparently, she's a sucker for the sensitive white boy voice. She's coming to my solo gig tonight. We'll see... Don't you love it when you luck into a surprise gig that's both musically and romantically satisfying? ------------------------------ 2 Kings 2:23-24 NKJV: And as he was going up the road, some youths came from the city and mocked him, and said to him, “Go up, you baldhead! Go up, you baldhead!” So he turned around and looked at them, and pronounced a curse on them in the name of the LORD. And two female bears came out of the woods and mauled forty-two of the youths." |

Actually, Seegs, "too much information" would be posting, tomorrow, what happens after my solo gig tonight.
They do have forums where I could post that sort of thing, but they're crowded with ads for Viagra and penile enlargment devices. ------------------------------ 2 Kings 2:23-24 NKJV: And as he was going up the road, some youths came from the city and mocked him, and said to him, “Go up, you baldhead! You must be quite the MF to fake your way thru Kid Charlemagne and Peg. I'd at least have to have played the song before. Best I ever faked thru was Sultans of Swing. Not too badly either. U2 stuff, etc.
We've got a 6 hour gig this weekend with a fill in keys player. I am going to be digging into the Real Book for this one. I would be surprised if I end up playing Twist and Shout and China Grove. Bridal party wants Crazy Train over introductions. Hot Brit for that one! My new pickups arrive tomorrow, gotta get the Strat wired before the gig. "Poor soul, he was just too high strung... I'm afraid the strain was more than he could bear." |
