I figured I'd ask because I'm atually not one for effects...I used a Klon Centaur and a Boss DD5 for my whole rig on tour last year...but I'm branching out and starting to make a new pedal board....

So how do you guys generally organize your chains?

Well I'm going to have a rackspace noise gate, a compressor of some kind...(either the Keeley or the Teese) and I'm debating A Phaser or a Chorus of some kind...(I need to research Chorus and Phasing units more first though)

I kind of want to replace my boss delay with one of those Line 6 units with memory banks first though.

I'm going for U2 Kind of clean Rhythms, Pixies meets Nada Surf as far as distorted Rhythms...and Brian May sounding gain structures for solo's.

I have an old Boss Flange and an old TR 2 Boss Tremolo lying around here too from days of yore...I might make a secondary pedal board for home studio recordings with whatever effects I have laying around...the Klon is definately staying in the rig though.

i've got the line 6 delay you're talking about (it's the dl4 model). love that pedal by the way. however, i just re-thought how i set up my chain (my effects loop was too hot, and it distorted the signal into the delay). as of right now it goes:

guitar-->voume pedal-->strobo stomp-->TIM-->dl4-->amp

the TIM was borrowed, but i'm getting either a timmy or a zen drive for that slot. i'll probably put a double mosferatu between that and the dl4 soon also.

i don't know much about the modulation placement, but i'm sure these other guys will be able to help you with that.

Typical order is . . .

Guitar-> Fuzz -> Wah -> Overdrives -> Modulation effects (Chorus/Flanger/Phaser) -> Time Based Effects (Delay/Reverb) -> Amp

There was a recent thread about Compression and where it goes, but the general consensus is pre ODs. Mine, however, is after which gives an obviously squashed sound.

Also in my chain Fuzz and Wah are reversed but I've got a mod in my Fuzz pedal that keep the Fuzz from sounding like crap when I do this. Usually the results are really bad.

Volume pedal placement also varies dependsing on if you are using it to control gain or overall volume.

There are no hard and fast rules but this should get you started.
