I'm running a Liquid Sunshine right now. Mostly love it, but it's actually a bit dark for my taste. I could always mess with the internal trim pots, but... that scares me.

Any suggestions besides Klon and Honey Bee? Would love to try those, but my wallet would mutiny and bite me in the ass.

I hear good things about the Lovepedal Super Six and the Hot Cake. Really just looking to make my 85 watts on 3 sound like 15 watts on 6 (tensile and hairy).

I can't speak to the Lovepedal or the Hot Cake (although I, too, am tempted by both), but I can't speak highly enough of the Zendrive--very soulful, although it does color a bit--and the humble Clark Gainster, which, if you can find one, is a wonderfully transparent and organic-sounding OD.

The drunker I sound, the better you get.

The Barber LTD fits what you are describing. It's also very reasonably priced at 120 from most vendors. There are also 3 different versions: the original (i own this one) which is flatter mids than a tubescreamer but still has a nice warm midrange yet still retains your bass, the silver which has very flat mids and adds very little eq change to the signal, and the SR which is a little more expensive and has the flatest eq and a more expressive tone control.

Banzai Cold Fusion is good in that role - really good for adding a touch of grit and some sustain.

I like my modded Blues Driver for Stones tones. I turn the gain and tone all the way down and adjust the level accordingly. At these levels it is dynamic and does not have much sustain or distortion, which I think is crucial to the Stones sound. I also have a Gainster copy that I cloned from my amp tech's Gainster. He used to work for Clark and made one for himself. I tried it and it sounded so good that I borrowed it and copied it. It probably cops the Tweed sounds a little better that the Blues Driver. From what I understand, the Gainster is very similar to the Boss OD-1, so you could check one of those out as a substitute.

I've never owned one, but I've heard that the Skreddy ScrewDriver at lower gain settings is good at this.

i have had a barber LTD silver for like 3 years now. I had all the other LTD's too but the silver always won. I have bought and sold this pedal 5 or 6 times each time I thought I had found THE dirt pedal but I always end up missing it. I have given up looking for an OD. The LTD silver cant be beat in my book for what you are looking for. goose it with a comp or tubescreamer for leads plays well with others etc. The gainster is cool too had the big box and regular version of that and its close but it hads some unnatural grit to the signal that you will end up noticing after the honeymoons over.
go with the silver LTD and try changing out your V1 tube to a 12 ay7 if its still not quite what you are looking for.

You can hear the barber LTD silver in action with a hot rod deluxe. LTD set for low gain, high volume as a boost.

check out the song "strange" then at the end on the outro harmony lead lick its the LTD goosed with an old DOD 280 comp

Durham makes one called the Zia Drive - I've never played one myself, but the clips I heard online were VERY Stones-ish. In fact, although I wasn't in the market for that type of pedal when I came across it, I thought it sounded so good that I'm now thinking about it...

Well, they're made of unobtanium, but the King of Tone is a great low gain OD. I'll 2nd the Timmy also.

Yeah, a Timmy is a great choice.

Then again, my new Cactus Crunch is doing a pretty fabulous job as a low gainer right now.

And I always like to mention the Blues Pro. I always call it "ZZ Top-In-A-Bottle". But, it really can add a nice Tweed-like Ratiness to your tones.

Ah, I love it--thanks, all!

That Zia Drive sounds incredible. I just installed a half power switch on my amp, so I should be able to juice it nicely at 45 watts instead of 85, which should help with the low gain crunch.

I've been curious about the Skreddy stuff, but the wait time is kind of a deal breaker. If a Screwdriver popped up on eBay anytime soon, I'd probably jump on it.

LTD calls my name, too...

I hate decisions.

My choices would be:
Tim
Hotcake
Blues Driver

There are so many things that would work well and you really don't need to spend a lot.

I hear that. Wisdom mixed with GAS is a good combination.

For "Stonsey grind", the best pedal I've played is the low gain side of the Hughes & Kettner "Tube Factor". I pretty much hated the stacked higher gain side of the circuitry, but the low gain circuit absolutely killed with a variety of amps, including Deluxe, Twin, AC30, and Carvin Bel Air.

I need small footprint gainers anymore, and I'm reasonably happy with a Timmy. However, if H&K offered the low gain side of the Tube Factor in a smaller format, I'd jump all over it in a heartbeat.

I kind of favor the new model Foxy Brown for that Keef tortured small amp sound.
