Well, my search for rare and hyped overdrives continues.

The last month or so I have managed to buy another Klon (sold it already), Way Huge Green Rhino, and today I just bought a Landgraff DO. I know Tonequest has one of these and seems to like it.

Any thoughts or insights on this hyped-up 808ish overprices pedal?? Razz

I like my DO but it's not going to get a SRV tone. It's really smooth and midrangy. Not a great rhythm pedal. It has a ton of gain.Did you order a tone kit?

No thoughts on the Langraff but my $30 Nobels ODR-1 has yet to be kicked off my board. As always, your mileage may vary.

I like the tone of the Nobles but it has the worst buffer I've ever heard. It's a major tone sucker.

It didn't work for me. Sold it for more than I paid for it. The LGW with a PGC replaced it.

Everyone has different needs. You may like it very much.

The Landy was where I drew the line. Just too much money.

Funny thing, I'd have no problem spending $180 each on 2 ODs but $360 on 1 was too much.

Bellhorn! Love that guy!

Sox win!

I swear I was ready to throw up after Foulke blew the save.

Anyway, ODs were an obsession for me, just like most of us. Here's what I remember:

Banzai Fireball and Cold Fusion (twice)
AC Booster
Fulltone FDII (3 times, still have one)
MJM Blues Devil
Tonebone Classic and Hot Brit (still have HB)
Pharaoh Sweet Cheetah and Midnight Cruiser (MC on the block, SC gone)
Fuse Blower
Barber DDSS
TTS
DRD
BBOD
BrontoBoost
Mosferatu
Guvnor
Guvnor 2
TBIAC
Keeley Rat (still have)
TIM (I can't see getting rid of this)

I can't remember anymore, but what it came down to was they were all sounding pretty damn similar so I purged.

I was fun tho. I was into those Takkys, but never got one. I keep an eye out for Banzais still

Yeah I like the Nobels too, I got a good one and havent been able to quite sell it off.....but I think consistency is the problem,,, lots of variation....

I did exactly what DC did, Dumped the Landy for the LGW/PGC combo and never regretted it......... but I also recently got my Landy back and I do enjoy it , it lacks subtlety like a jacked up muscle car, but it has plenty of guts and its fun to drive sometimes...

The Langraff is a very musical pedal. If you like smooth milky distorion then the Lady might just do the job.It has a thick midrange due to the top end being warmer than a TS.It is very clear, even at high gain settings.I thought about selling mine quite a few times but never went through with it.I think it's alittle too smooth but my bandmates love the pedal. They tell me that I shouldn't sell it,maybe they know something that I don't.I guess my ears are getting tired of hearing alot of midrange. In the up position it cuts like a MoFo.In the down position it's more compressed and closer to a TS.John L sells a tone kit that allows you to dial it in to your taste.

He actually charges for $.50 worth of parts? I would think for the amount he charges for the pedal he could at least throw in the tone kit. Roll Eyes

He charges $40 (or was it $50 new? I saw a "used" one for $40) for the tone kit. And even if you consider quantity discounts from wholesale buying, it's more like $10 worth of parts Smile

It still should be included with the Landy.

It's only $20 and they are high quality parts. He's not over charging for the caps.Maybe for the pedal but he's being fair with the caps.

That's cool. That's my main problem with the Landy - he charges thru the nose to limit demand, as he doesn't want to be swamped by this thing. Paul Cochrane could probably charge Landy money. We all know that the street price of a TIM is way more than Paul charges (or used to charge).

ITs funny Ive had the Tone Kit for a long time, but never got to messing with it, Im not sure what I would change !! It is a good educational tool to see how easy it is to 'mod' something....

and the $20 is more for the extra time it takes to put it together, and it has like 5 different batch JRC chips etc....

Like anything else, if it has THE tone for you, then $400.00 is NOT too much to spend.

I've got a schematic for the landgraff. As it appears, any tubescreamer can be modified to clone it (except for the true bypass switching, of course)
The tone kit, if it's just a couple different value caps, would only cost 2-3 bucks from Mouser or any other supplier.
I do believe he jacks up the prices only to limit demand. He makes less pedals, makes more money. Less headaches, less overhead, go ask Howard (or is that Alexander?) Dumble how that works.

Today, its Alex if you know him otherwise Mr. Dumble.
He's got quite a nice spread for having only about 100 amps in circulation.

My experience exactly.

I use mine in the TS mode (switch down) with the gain anywhere from about 1:00 pm to almost full.

I had one, sold it, missed it so much I bought it again. Each time I only paid about $325 used.

I also had a Mo'D for a while. I'd buy it again too if one showed up for about $325 or so...
