So I'm about to put some lower output pickups in my suhr classic which is long over-due (looking for a trower/hendrix thing).
Playing through my Marshall (2061x-20 watt)I suspect that I will have to make some changes with regard to speakers. I feel that the amp is overpowering the cab (G12H-30 re-issue )...causing the rounded off flat feel (spongy) on clean and full on OD tones...this also becomes more pronounced with a wah added....I need something that will handle the volume while keeping the tone intact.... I'm thinking of Celestion G12h (heritage series)speakers.....I want a great clean/overdrive tone (natural) , with string clarity at practice/gig volume.... What do you guys suggest? Thanks...Roger |

Greenbacks... oh, sorry... what was the question again?
Seriously though, I'm a little confused. I believe your amp is a solid state rectifier into a 60 watt cabinet. Without hearing your whole rig, I wouldn't be able to diagnose the issue, but if I remember your playing humbucker pickups. Is that right? |

Sorry, I looked at the other thread. It seems you're playing V60s, so I'm not sure. Have you tried using a germ booster. I have a Java Boost I use for this kind of issue, but I'm using a Plexi.

Hey Richard...thanks for the response. Right now I'm going with a lower output pickups & am hoping that will solve the problem.
Greenbacks, yup....I checked out the Heritage g12m & g12h.... Yes, the cab is a 60 watt....I also checked out the Vintage 30's with a 50 watt power rating. Maybe they would handle the power with a little less breakup than the 30 watt rating I have now to get some more clarity?? My other thought is to go with 12at7's in the preamp section....that would be a last resort I guess. Interestingly I did try a java boost, but it colored my tone a bit. What do you think of the Vintage 30's?? Have you had any experience with them....?? Roger |

I would go with a higher rated speaker, like a 50 or a 65 watt.
I am currently using a 100 watt Scumback H75 in a 2X12 cabinet with my Soldano HR+ and Marshall VM (both 50 watts)and fully recommend them. They're supposed to a be more authentic 60's Celestion clones. I think a couple of 50 watters would open up the 2061 sound without altering its tone too much. |

Only a bit? Maybe it wasn't turned on I think the lower output pickups might help and maybe the higher rated speakers. Let us know how it goes... |

Well I finally got the bare knuckles pickups in and they REALLY made a huge difference!!
I finally am hearing my strat with the string windings without the mush!! If you have an opportunity to try the Mothers Milk they really get you some great Hendrix/Trower tones in the neck/middle and in between. Really clear clean tone, very resposive to volume and tone controls (I ride them constantly) and the blues pro works exceptionally well with these as well(of course). These lean toward a more traditional stat with the lower output. For now no change in speakers but I've been eyeing the Alnico Golds..... Thanks everyone for you help....Roger |
