The world has just lost a great entertainer. Jerry was one of the greatest country guitarists who ever lived IMO. His influence cannot be overestimated. It's a sad day.
Carlin, Bernie Mac, Issac Hayes, now Jerry--wow--this year officially sucks. I didn't realize that he was 71. He's never really aged like most folks. Brilliant player--I wish I could cop some of his stuff--the guy was amazing! RIP
God, how pathetic is it that I only remember his music from that episode of Scooby Doo he was on? What's his best work? I feel like I should at least do him the honor of finding out what he was really about...
What a loss. Great musician, great personality. Another Atlanta boy gone on to the great gig in the sky. Skip Caray's gone on as well... not to mention Utah Phillips (not an Atlanta boy)... it's been a tough year for losing folks.
Ironically, I recently watched the cornball classic "Smokey and the Bandit". Admittedly, my first priority was to view Sally Field wearing tight jeans in the prime of her life. However, Jerry Reed's redneck humor/intellect has always been a treat. That man is the very epitome of "good ol' boy", and I'm talking about the positive connotations of such.
He was a monster player with great taste. I've checked in with local FM "country" radio off and on today, and while his passing was mentioned, I didn't hear any tunes. On the flip side, I've heard at least seven classic Jerry Reed tracks on local college radio stations within the past two hours. Make of that what you will.
I'm going to revisit the tune "Bluefinger" that I used to play. It's a classic Jerry Reed thing with counterpoint bass line and melody.
