How in the world can I get a pedal version of that AWESOME rhythm tone at the beginning of Kings of Leon's "Black Thumbnail?"

I know that the KOL rhythm dude uses an AC30 (on stage, at least) to get that grindy clean/dirt tone. Is it even possible for me to get this by running some sort of wunderpedal between my humbucker'd semi-hollow and overpowered Twin?

Top Boost in a Can? Some sort of treble boost? I have a Screw Driver on the way--will that get me there? I've demoed the Zia Drive and it was just way too gainy.

TBIAC would be an excellent choice.

+1 on the TBIAC.

As someone who just got one I am seriously digging it - the interactivity and flexibility of the controls, the incredibly natural sounding crunch and overdrive tones, as well as its tonal flexibility otherwise.

The TBIAC sounded heavenly with my Fender Champ. But I could not get it to sound right in my Maz 18-

EL84 amps seem to have a lot of problems with pedals, especially if the pedal is trying to cop an EL84-type tone.

Hmmm, My AC 30 seems to take pedals really well. The only one it hasn't liked so far is my Soulbender.

Weird, mine doesn't.. At least not the 99% of peds that are TS-copies. Except for my Fulldrive with the flat mids mode and stuff.

It's not the EL84's that are the problem. It's the bright caps that are in almost all EL84 type amps. Snip that cap and your amp will work much better with overdrives.

Where do I find that, what will happen and can I turn it back?

Many thanks for the suggestions, lads. I'm going to try the Screw Driver out for kicks since it's already on the way. If it's a dog with my setup, however, I'm marching straight over to my shop and picking up a TBIAC. I will then rejoice.

Headshot, do you have anything to recommend on the clipping bright cap suggestion?

Found it!

I just got my Hagstrom Viking back from the shop, where they dropped in a set of Seymour Duncan Phat Cats. First impressions are that they sound exponentially better than the craptastic stock p'ups. Set to the bridge pickup with my new Screw Driver, in particular, is where it gets fuggin' unbelievable! "Mary Jane's Last Dance" in box.
