Thanks!

I just got done playing this thing for about an hour and it freakin’ rocks! I tried a friend’s NKT-275 Sunface and I liked it a lot, great tone, but I remember wishing that it had a little more gain. I think the BC-108 is what I was looking for. It doesn’t clean up quite as well as the NKT version but that is to be expected. Still, there are ample shades of fuzz available with the volume pot; you just can’t get it dead clean like you can the NKT SF.

Jim,

You don’t really need the sundial as the silicon trannys are much more stable than the germs and aren’t affected by temperature, but it does give you a bit more tonal flexibility. The sundial controls the same thing on the BC-108 as the NKT, the bias.

On the BC-108, when you turn the bias counter-clockwise to the left, the fuzz becomes darker and weaker, with less punch and presence to the sound. When turning the bias clockwise-to the right, the fuzz becomes more jagged and sputtery, more out of control… and there is also an increase in high-mid and treble frequencies…to my ears anyway.

I’ve been keeping mine at the center most of the time, which would be the same thing as not having the sundial installed, but it is fun to tweak the dial for different tones. Generally, I prefer to turn the bias to the right, as when you lower the bias the fuzz sound is weaker.

If you dig the my-amp-is-about-to-explode tones, or if you like to tweak, then I say get the sundial.

I really love this pedal. I’m glad I got the BC-108; I like having the extra gain and sustain. The only drawback of the silicon transistors is that they’re more susceptible to RF interference…I was getting a great R&B radio station through my amp while jamming with my SF tonight! But then I’m just reminded of Jimi at the Isle of Wight, and I smile and everything's cool! Wink

I tried Stax´s Sunface today and I must say I really like it. It´s the best fuzz I´ve tried, but I haven´t tried that many. I have a Fulltone ´69 which sounds good but more harsh than the Sunface. The Sunface cleans up really good when I turn the volume down on my guitar. It´s lovely. Sunface sounds smoother and creamier than the ´69 to me.

What do you guys think?

Oh, by the way. Have you tried the zendrive and Tim yet - Stax?

Here's my recent review

I haven't done a pedal review in a couple of years. So, please bare with me. Smile

I can't believe that it took me a few years to finally try this pedal. After all this years trying almost everything "Fuzz Face" related, I've actually never tried one until yesterday.

One of my favorite Fuzz Face is my early 2002 (?) Arbiter England grey Fuzz Face that had an "analogman mod" (I guess he changed the weak transistors that was originally on the pedal). Anyways, that's the closest of me owning an analogman modded pedal.

Going back to the Sunface. My initial reaction was "is that it"?! One my other favorite is the MJM London Fuzz, which most always ask questions and compare both "Fuzz Face" derivatives. The Sunface has lesser gain compared to the London Fuzz. I really get it why a lot of people like the AM Sunface pedal, because it's not quite a "fuzz", more like a really cool fuzzy overdrive. It has a very "tubescreamer-like" quality to it.

A lot people find that the MJM London Fuzz (www.mjmguitarfx.com) a bit darker sounding, and I believe everyone is right, because the London sounds fatter and creamier compared to the AM Sunface. The sundial, I find that it's totally a bias knob that slightly changes the character of the fuzz, but doesn't really affect the tone that much on either turn. I am also surprised how, for a "germanium fuzz" that it gets radio signals! If it was a silicon fuzz, I would say, ok...that's normal, but for a germanium fuzz, I was really surprised that it gets radio signals. My new blue silicon Dunlop JH Fuzz Face (JTripps tweaked) is waaay quieter!

The tone that you would get from the pedal is really nice though, it sounds like slightly cranked plexi, very Cream-era Clapton (live stuff). I was playing it through a 22 watt Space Tone Amp http://swartamps.com/swart_atomic_tone.htm and as soon as I cranked the amp a bit, the Sunface just totally shined. It was very very nice. Now, I get it why some "famous guys" like it. It would totally send any nice cranked tube amp, into stratosphere! Or a Blues Rock tone nirvana Cool But in lower volumes, not so great. Frown

I would give it an 8/10 just because it was a bit noisy and it has very little gain and "fuzz".

I assume that you’re talking about the NKT-275 version of the Sunface, right? If so I agree with you that there isn’t quite enough fuzz on tap, not enough for me anyway. Even so, this may be an advantage if you’re running it into an amp that already breaking up quite a bit...like a cranked plexi for example.

If you have a chance you should check of the BC-108 Sunface; lots of gain on tap, great sounding fuzz. I still love mine and the honeymoon has been over for a while now.

I do want to try the London Fuzz though as I’ve heard they sound pretty good into clean Fender amps...would you agree with that statement?

the AM sunface nkt 275 is a great fuzz, but not the best. it can be somewhat thin and very noisy. with single coils, i can only bare the noise with the fuzz down all the way.
it has very warm tone, but i prefer the ceasar diaz square fuzz

Our NKT sunface is the quietest germanium sfuzzface made. The NKT transistors don't have barely any noise. If you find a noisy one, send it back and we'll replace a bad transistor if we fond one. It is very rare for one to get noisy though as we test them all for noise before building the pedal.

Hey Mike. I will order one. I just love the Sunface. It works fine with both my strat and my telecaster. But it´s best with the strat... Yum!

And the one I tried wasn´t noisy at all.

The Sunface NKT was great with my strat. I just ordered one brand new for my pal Nanook. He's been a bit down about the sagging fortunes of the Swedish National Hockey team. A real low point was the game on their recent North American tour. They were playing The Little Sisters of the Sacred Heart Convent outside Trois-Rivieres Quebec. It wasn't so much the 5-0 thrashing, but Sister Sophie blowing by their defense for a hat trick was a bit much to swallow. But I digress, anyways I think Thomas will really enjoy the NKT 275, it's a great fuzz.
