I saw pics of some well-known guitarists' effects rigs at pedalboard.com and most were using Line 6 digital effects.
I notice that people snub thier noses at Line 6 stuff. Why do the rich and famous choose to use this gear if it's mediocre?
Thanks.

I think the main reason is that they cover a lot of sonic territory in a small space. Also, a lot of guitar players just don't screw around with gear much. Some of the stuff we couldn't live without, they have never heard of. Additionally, from an audience perspective, how many people are going to know the difference between an echoplex and a digital model of one? I've pretty much come to the conclusion that the gear game is for one's own benefit, not the audience's.

Well the Line 6 Delay sounds very good in alive band context and for all that it does its hard to beat.......but there is room for improvement and I think in the next year you will see a few sound quality improvements in digital delay/modulation effects,,,, and some of those Line 6s will be retired.... As said above, they cover a lot of ground and get the job done. Those few I know that make a part of their living doing sessions, have very "robust" rigs they know - and know how to tweak quick. They don't fool around too much, or at all with their rigs.

I'm an analog snob like a lot of you, and I have Line 6 on my pedalboards. Why? I think the delay is very cool. It's close enough that I don't need to bring my beloved vintage Deluxe Memory Man, My Echoplex, My Boss delay and a few others, to gigs. For me, it's like having a ped-controllably Deluxe memory man with presets for different songs. I hate having to tweak pedals during a show.

I'll use what sounds good, but I'm not about to take four extra delay units and a real leslie out to a gig.

A lot of pro guitarist use the Line 6 Delay because of the tap function and presets.KWS and Doyale Bramhall use it for that very reason.

If it ain't broke, fix it anyways.

I think it is because most guys learn over time that live no one is going to know the difference.
That is why I shy away from these long discussions on which (pickup, pedal, string, tube)is the best(insert argument here), "the SHO is less blah than the Fat-Boost" blah blah blah. The only time you will hear such subtleties is in your room and sometimes in the recording studio.

Now, to completely contradict myself, I too am an anaolouge snob and a bit of a gear snob. I like handmade stuff, kill me. BUT I am learning that live, you simply can't tell.

I saw King's-X a little over a year ago and Ty had 2 POD's in a rack. Sounded great, dosen't mean I'll trade in my Route 66 though.

I still feel a great amp makes the biggest difference in overall tone.

I'd just like to add that a fellow pedal freak who knows that I'm a staunch analog guy complimented me after a gig for my great delay tone.

He was crushed to find out it was the Line 6.

I agree with the idea that... well, in the live show, a lot of subtlety is lost. At the practice james and rehearsals, I am focused on my sound, and I focus on gigs too, but when I'm off stage and in the clubs, I know I am hearing other bands through a wash of blasting PA and a bad accoustic room. That audience has no idea I'm leaving my MoogerFooger at home and using a $60 used Phase 90 instead. Even if I hear it in the monitor, the crowd couldn't tell from the PA (well, not with the whole band going, anyway).

In a studio, through headphones, I'd say the Line6 sounds nothing like an Echoplex. In a club, it usually goes no further than "I hear echo."

WORD.

I think that getting your base sound of amp/spks, and guitar is a foundation that I then add a few pedals to. As long as my signal gets to the amp with as little coloration, i can live with a line 666, not being exactly like my EP or boss dd-3. VDG

I am NOT too loud!
