Like using a wah going fast, of course there's more to it, but that's a general way to describe it.
Depending on how hard you hit the string it reacts... wich is relative to how the sensitivity/treshold of the effect is set to.
Hope this helps

If you are familiar with Edie Brickell and the new bohemian's "What I am" (a big late 80's hit) the guitar solo of that song I believe is with an envelope filter.

Would the ZVEX Seek Wah fit into this category?

Fuzzface,
I owned a Meatball (sold it last year) and thought it was the most incredible envelope filter I have ever heard (incredible versatility), however, at $450 or so, it's a very expensive pedal to not use very often.
I came across a Q-tron cheap earlier this year and have been using that and it works wonderfully for my tastes. You can get them on Ebay in the $100 range, give or take a few.

As to envelope filter brand recommendations, I think the Electro-Harmonix Micro-Synth is probably the best... and it does a bunch of other things too. It's very flexible as well as easy to use.
The Meatball is very flexible... but NOT easy to use. It is difficult to dial in specific tones because the controls interact with each other in weird ways. You can get some really far-out stuff from it, and it does have some tricks and features that the Micro-Synth doesn't have, but it's a VERY challenging effect. For your first envelope filter I'd recommend against it. Maybe in a few years I'll have mine figured out.
For a great sounding, fairly cheap solution look for an old Ibanez AF-9 Autofilter. Same series as the TS-9, with the metal enclosure and all. Simple but very nice sounding and plenty of options to get started with.

Fuzzface, I use an Ibanez AW-5 auto-wah...
For my use it's great, I use it when I feel like funk or for weird eperimentation... it's not a everyday pedal to me so this is perfect. It's a cheap alternative to me.
One of the sought after auto filter is the Ibanez AF-9 but good louck finding one under 100$
Also on the cheap side... you could try a DOD FX-25B(that's the new edition) The older one was teh FX-25 green one, the new one has an added knob for setting the range for either bass or guitar... many peope who tried the earlier version prefer the earlier version... this one and because of this prices have gone up on it.
I ended up with my AW-5 after hearing out the Wah Rocker(guyatone), some of Boss, and DOD new version... because it had a warmth to it that I prefered and I found one cheap.
Hope this somehow helps

i have an older boss ft-2 dynamic filter that sounds nice. if it matters it's japanese, i think, and it sounds a hell of a lot better than the auto wah. if anyone is interested, i'm thinking of selling it at a resonable price.

I agree with you about the M-S, it's great, lot's of sounds. But the filter is not an envelope filter. It is a triggerd filter. Meaning you set the threshold, and when you play above it, the filter goes through its sweep, whereas an envelope filter changes with your dynamics constantly. I think the frostwave Funk-a-Duck seems like a really good buy. Lot's of tweakability and a good price. Also that Ibanez sounds great. But I think they are "collectable" so prices will generally be way too high.
Cheers

Has anyone tried the mini Q-tron? I heard some soundfiles and it sounds cool!

Just got a Mini Q...and I like it. It seems much more sensitive to my pick attack. The wah tones are more "liquid" and sound more natural to my ears. It supposedly has the essential circuitry of the Qtron and Qtron+, with the 3 mode options and the Q setting, you can get quite a range of tones. The only "negative" is the case size. It is large...about the size of a Big Muff...
