I love my Maxon AD80 and now i want a second analog delay that offers a little-bitty more high end. any suggestions? i'm thinking of heading over to a store and trying the DM2 and DM3s there.

also, i worry that my pedal is getting more noisy as time goes by, do any of you re-calibrate your pedals? i'm just afraid that if mess something up with the trim pots, i won't be able to get the settings i currently rely on.

Lastly, i'm thinking about using higher voltages into my AD? i use a Pedal Power...am wondering if delays would be more pronounced if i use the ACA level of power. i think i'll try it tonight.

btw, i wanted to thank Cubba65, one for selling me his AD80 last year, and two, for coming to my band's show on saturday - it was great seeing you there and the ad-80 kicks ass!

The DM2 is very much like your AD80, try the DM3 it seems to have a little more high end

Noisy as time goes by? Never heard of that one, but it's possible I guess. If you must mess with the trims, use a fine point sharpie to mark the factory settings.

I would advise against doing that your likely to fry the pedal. They aren't overbuilt like some boutique pedals. I think what your wanting is more audible delays, the trim pots may give you that...maybe not. I would wait to hear from other tweakers to see the outcome

If you want more highs why not go digital ? I thought the appeal of analog delays was the darker sound.

I've got an AD80, but I am thinking about swapping it out for the new Blackbox Quicksilver that been discussed on here, it's digital but supposedly can cop a great analog vibe as well.

I second the dm-3. Boss specifically designed it to have more high end.

I'm not recomending you mess with the trim pots, you can lose your delays all together, or end up with a high pitch noise. But, I found with my AD-9, that when you fine tune the delay time, add more or less, that will change the tone off the delays. Longer delay times can be a bit distorted and darker, and shorter ones will be clean(er), maybey brighter(higher fidelity). So that might even do the trick if you don't mind losing afew ms. Other wise I second the digital idea. It's great to have both.

ya, my AD-80 has a bit of that high-pitch. buggy noise, but i just like to think that it adds to the whole lo-f, washy sound that i like.

don't wanna mess with the pots cause it's set where at the slowest delay times, it doesn't runaway at max settings. it does runaway at faster settings though!

also, i realized that the delays are very muffled since i'm running the AD-80 into my reverb pedal. the attack is a little more apparent without the reverb.

as for digital, i'm purging myself of digital delays on ebay right now. the only one i'm keeping is my Digitech PDS-8000 since it has the sampler that changes pitch - great stuff!

i'm going check out the dm-3 today when i go look at a microreverb pedal...maybe a little more high end in conjunction with the reverb would be just what i need...

I think I know what you're talking about. I was once critically listening to my DM-3 and I recall hearing this high pitched boingy-ness that kind of ghosted along with the delayed notes. I wonder if we're talking about the same thing. I just attributed it to its age.

Well G, you are very welcome on both counts !!

I have to say that you and your AD80 are getting along VERY well. You had a real dreamy 80's wash going there with your funky sounding Hagstrom (dig it !), your Vibrato pedal (so 1982), and your AD80 making those beautiful trailing off delays that drift away into the ethos.

I think that combined with more of the punk power chord things you were doing had me seeing a little Daniel Ash sound happening. Bauhuas in da' haus ! Great job Holmes !

Unfortunately, that room was absolutely terrible sounding and ruined any definition of sound you guys were making. But it was cool nonetheless and I could clearly hear what you guys are about.

Anyway, I'd say you should look into trying out a digital delay, albeit one that is noted for its more analog qulaities. There is the DLS, Guyatone, Ibz. Echomachine, etc. They all have a clearer, yet still somewhat analog tone. I think all analog delays are going to sound a bit dark. The only one I know of that supposedly got around this was the Way Huge Aqua Puss. I heard that Jorge managed to manipulate the circuit so thst it had more hi-end, yet didnt have the squeal that comes along with an analog clock.

Of course, I have never tried one, they are completely off the map for me ($$$$$). Maybe someone will pipe in and tell us if I am wrong or right and if the sound is clearer.

Definitely try out the "right" digital models first. TBP them with a TBP-box, you wont even know it's digital. If you knew how many great guitar delay sounds were made digitally, you wouldn't be afraid.

Go ahead kid, try it, just a little taste, just one, your not gonna like flip out or somethin'... Eek
