Does anyone know a good distortion pedal for less than £50/$50 I am a pedal virgin and need a nice one

If you want a heavy,modern tone for cheap get the Ibanez Smash Box. Danelectro Fabtone is a good cheap distorion pedal as well

Look at the EH Big Muff & the ProCo Rat pedals. They are just a little bit more than the amount you specified.

The Boss DS1 distortion is pretty good and if set right,can get Marshall-like tones.

Get a RAT. You really can't go wrong: solid as a brick, true bypass, tone that goes from mild grit to super-heavy grind.

Vintage Ibanez (10-series) are really good too and can be real affordable. Check ebay.

You might be able to get the Vox Distorion/Booster at a nice price used. It really is a musical pedal, if you play rock, it's not for metal tones. It's really is a nice pedal and they're a lot cheaper used now than what they were selling them for brand new.

That one and the Vox valveTone overdrives are 2 gems, that a lot of people don't know about.

The ProCo rat and the Electro harmonix big muff are great if you like analog distortion. If not, on your budget I'd say either ibanez tone-lok distortions are a good choice
