The Brown Rabbit is a pedal that will always be a keeper for me. I'd like to add that it is a fantastic stacker pedal as well as standalone!

I owned the digilog too, but had too many delays to keep - very cool features though.

I'm really jonsing for the Maharishi! I can revisit my memories from Alhambra and get my Zen on....

Okay... got the tourbox yesterday. And rocked it today.

As everyone here very well knows, the artwork is absolutely incredible. Especially on the digilog with the ghost looking into the mirror. That's a clever image that will definitely stay with me for sometime.

For me the unexpected hit was the brown rabbit.

I will definitely keep this one in mind for a simple dumb and effective distortion/OD that just works! SUPER easy to dial in... sounds great with all my amps and guitars.. just a hell of a no-brainer great sounding pedal! Like the volume knob interaction.. and the three toggle settings are both cool, but my favorite was just the middle setting as it was the most neutral and open with my rig.

My next fav was the digilog. Very nice analog-voiced digital delay. Again.. very easy to dial in. And the feedback momentary switch is a joy to work with.

I would actually buy one of these if it wasn't analog voiced. I already have many analog delays, but could use a pristine digital delay that was as dumb and effective.... and sat in the mix as well as this one.

My third fave was the booster. Again simple to dial in and really big sounding for such a small ped. I imagine it would be killer with a tele, as it had an inherent fullness to it's sound. Nice warm overtones too.

My least fave was the maharashi. And this was a trip for me, as it was the one I was most interested in. I think basically my guitar pups are too low output to really make it sing. It does a convincing enough sitar sound, but was a bit choked sounding. I'm sure if I had more time with it I could dial it in more, but to be honest, my vintage foxx tone machine has a much more pronounced octave effect and gets really sitar sounding on it's own with my volume rolled off a bit.

To be fair, the Maharashi just may need more time for me to really learn how to play it. Who knows... with a little time it might turn out to be a must have for me. Unfortunately with tourboxes, things come and go real quick and much necessary experimenting goes un-done.

Paul... send me the address for the next person and I'll get the box sent out.

Big thanks to Freakshow effects and Paul for setting this tour up.

until then..

Thanks for your thoughtful comments Alex!

Clif and I emailed each other, so if he is really close to you,
or closer than Fresno is to you,
then please deliver them to him.

"Clif" is Clif Taylor,
the director/creator of the fantastic film that came out last year called
"FUZZ, The Sound That Revolutionized the World"
(which by the way is available here at Musictoyz).

So since he expressed an interest, I couldn't say no....
he's also a friend of duende's and lives in SF.

Then onto throckmorton (<-- sorry brother!).

Alex, I'll send you his addy.

Yesterday afternoon, the postal carrier (not an envelope follower) had me sign for a mysterious package. Upon examination, I first believed the contents to be a surprise objet trouvé (found art object) from Tristan Tzara, Marcel Duchamp, Nam Jun Paik, Ray Johnson, or Genesis P-Orridge ... until I found my mind and realized that it was The Freakshow F/X Tour Box! Inside the decorative antique suitcase were the glorious, hand painted effects pedals safely nestled in their respective foam cutouts, along with a decription of each one on a piece of typing paper, typed on a genuine mechanical typewriter. The font did not appear to be Smith Corona; although, how can I be Suhr in a whirled that's constantly changing?

If you'll excuse me, I shall now "hop to" and go chasing brown rabbits.

In all seriousness and sincerity to Paul, Alex, and everyone involved, thank you. I can't wait to try out the sitar emulator and the delay, especially.

More to follow promptly.

Ha, great one Erik!

Little known, "art-attack" secret:
If you put three of the pedals together side-by-side,
they form an "exquisite corpse."

Throcky's Nu Zioux Revue
Live at Pete's Teriyaki Hut

Nah, I was just joshin' ... these were not tested in public before an attentive audience at Pete's Teriyaki Hut but rather in the relative comfort and sanctuary of my nest of empty Dr. Pepper Cans and discarded Georgia-Pacific paper products, located in a secret lair somewhere West of Lufkin, Texas -- the home town of the Chic-O-Stix factory.

Guitar: Suhr Classic Strat, Surf Green, V-60 single coils
Amp: Mesa/LOOGie F-50 with JJ GOLD PINS preamp tubes; 12AU7 (Mu=20) in slot V. 1 to tame the surplus, cascading gain and resultant concomittant "sizzling bacon" timbre
Cables:Andrews 1-5/8" Heliax, Nitrogen filled and pressurized, 'LC connectors', j/k

DigiLog Delay

Mang, I got mayonnaise all over my smoking jacket when I plugged this one in! Finally, I got delayed. In all seriousness, I truly dig the flock outta this pedal. It is indeed warm as described on the typed, interior insert of the suitcase. I'm in love with this pedal and am fully committed to purchasing one. It's extremely useable and has a very quiet noise-floor as compared to most analog delays that I've worked with. The whole spectrum is available from subtle slapback to scary ghost sounds. Did someone say ectoplasm? I don't think this one is gooped, though. Hehehhe.

Brown Rabbit

This one blew away any negative preconceived notions that I have about distortion pedals in general. It sounds just as good or better than the second channel (distorted, with or without "contour") in my Mesa/LOOGie. The three voicings are all really cool. I've tried the JRC-4558 based op-amp, Maxon "Tube Screamer" 808 and all of their variants ... and they make me wanna hurl aisle nine. The 'Brown Rabbit' thoroughly kicks all other distortion pedals in the 'you-know-what' with an ice skate!

Maharishi

Nada Brahma: The Lord is Sound? Yehudi Menuhin, Budadev Das Gupta, East Meets Wes(t)? It was not quite a sitar timbre but I don't think it was ever exlicitly stated as such. Actually, I think it would be cool to run vocals through the Maharishi. Ring Modulation brings peace and salvation. Interestingly, I could evoke some MXR Blue Box squirrely type sounds at extreme settings! That shocked me. This would work really well for a pyschedelic, industrial, vaudeville act; and sit really well in the recording mix -- believe it or not. I do. The only slight, trivial thing I noticed was a little bit of 'scratchiness' when rotating the far left pot. However, that may have been pilot error, e.g. - gain up too high or all controls in non-standard context. Again, I think this would be really cool on vocals or creating a weirdo anthem, like Paul Leary's contribution to the Meat Puppets' "Inflatable", where Paul *did* use an MXR Blue Box. Don't ask why. Try.

"9"

Yes, this did add presence to my single coil Suhr Strat Classic! It's absolutely transparent and a nice physically tiny "clean boost". The 9 is just as effective as my Tube Amp Doctor RangeKing but 1/4 the size and doesn't have a control labled "Balls". Udo Dirkschneider? I think I'll cover up that "Balls" control with an Avery label that says "Flaps", instead. In conclusion, the "9" is a great little booster.

Summary

Again, I like the DigiLog so much that I intend to purchase one. These are all great pedals. I have some minor concerns about the protection of the hand-painted art work by Team Jessica at Fort Awesome. Perhaps there should be a more robust layer of varnish to protect her precious creations from potential chipping or damage. The art work is so wonderful and unique ... I'm almost afraid to take the pedal(s) anywhere. Perhaps I'm being too paranoid and maybe they already are varnished but I couldn't detect any applique. That is my only one minor suggestion.

Credits

Thank you to the folks at Freakshow F/X, Jessica at Fort Awesome, Paul, Teddy, and everyone involved. Scott, I am going to my UPS packaging person right now. Please look forward to receiving a private message with the tracking number. Again, thank you one and all! Smile

Same setup as used in the Retrosonic tour box...

Fender CS Nocaster with Fred Stuart pickups (Black Guard neck pickup and a Lap Wrap bridge pickup).
Carr Rambler
Solid Cables Dynamic Arc Ultra

Digilog Delay - PT2399 based delays are probably my favorite and the Digilog is no exception. A warm and natural sound that doesn't get in the way with the momentary oscillation switch being a cool feature.

Brown Rabbit - I've never owned a Rat but I really like the Brown Rabbit with the middle position of the toggle switch being my favorite. All three positions are very usable but the middle one made me want to play and worked very well with my setup. This one goes on the GAS list.

Maharishi - This one I didn't quite "get". I don't know what I was expecting or should expect but I didn't find it. Don't get me wrong...solid build and cool look but I think the Maharishi most likely just isn't my thing.

"9" - First off...loved the paint job, I'd buy it just for that. Killer clean booster in a small package. It didn't muck with my tone, just gave it some "more".

All of the pedals are solid builds and the paint jobs definitely give you the feeling of owning something unique. I would recommend the Digilog, Brown Rabbit and "9" without hesitation. As for the Maharishi I don't have anything bad to say but would urge people to try it, explore what it does and form their own opinion. Thanks for letting me get in on this one.

Thx Throcky for your usual quips and literary allusions. You are one well-read mutha' and a gas too!

Scott K.... thx for dropping that PT2399 chip refernece on the Digilog. I totally missed that and 'til now and you're dead-on. DDL's based on that chip do have a smooth, tape-like sound.

Poor Ryan, 2 tourboxes in one week,
oh the humanity!

Cool

Ry- guy, i had two last week, the Retro-Sonic and one from another board. IT's way too much, but just enough, if that make's any sense Big Grin

In the back of my head i was hoping the Freakshow box would skip ahead to me, just because i'm missing all the extra pedals.
Guess that's called "tourbox withdrawal" or something.

cheers
