Is it possible to cram some power tubes into my cheap samick Lator SS practice amp instead of the power transistors or whatever they're called? I made some pictures of the inside of the amp (not sure whether they'll work or not):
inside overview

front

spring reverb (I was really surprised when I saw this, but its sound sucks anyway)

circuit boards

Power transistors?

size comparison

power transformer EDIT: or rectifier, something like that

power stuff, with EURO plug thingy

I hope it's possible, and while we're at it: it it possible to have the spring reverb with less effect? when I turn it to 1 it's already too much and for ambience stuff 5 is more than enough for me. thanks!

Possible? Yes. Worth it? Well, I'll let you decide. Tubes and SS require completely different power supplies (since they run on completely different voltages) - it's not a plug and play thing. You will need a new power transformer AND output transformer, and probably a choke transformer, and output tube sockets, and the tubes themselves. Figure to spend $200+ here. A new Fender Pro Jr. tube amp will cost you $300, maybe $200-250 used.

I'm with davei; why would you want to spend that kind of money and trouble converting a cheap Samick SS amp to a tube amp when you can buy a good tube amp for so little money these days? For what you'd spend, you could buy two used Peavey Classic 30's or Carvin Nomads. For that matter, you'd spend about the same amount on a used early-silverface Fender Bassman head, and get a sound you could never duplicate by cramming tubes into a cheap factory chassis built to house transistors.

While we're on the subject, I have an all-plastic toy electric guitar that my son used when he was three. Even the frets are plastic. I has a little music box crank near where the volume knob would be. Anyway, I'm thinking about dropping in a couple of Lollars, or maybe a Harmonic Design humbucker. What do you guys think?

OK, I'm being sarcastic. Sorry. Big Grin

2 Kings 2:23-24 NKJV:
And as he was going up the road, some youths came from the city and mocked him, and said to him, "Go up, you baldhead! Go up, you baldhead!" So he turned around and looked at them, and pronounced a curse on them in the name of the LORD. And two female bears came out of the woods and mauled forty-two of the youths."

ok, i just wondered about the possibility, but if it's that expensive I'll go save up for a good tube amp.
