the only place in town with em is guitar resurrection, and they charge $13 a set...no questions. Frown they deal high end stuff, which I love, but they also think of their strings in terms of high end pricing. Roll Eyes

I can totally see your point about juststrings having just looked through their prices. I can get pure blues one pack at a time for $3.50 here in town.

TP, would you check the packaging so we can be sure you have exactly the same sets in the US as here in Germany - the 10's say set No. 402 on them.

If so, you might consider a bulk order from the German store I get 'em from. At 3 Euros a set, you'd probably save even with tax and postage, but I'd calculate that carefully first.

I've seen good reviews of these strings.

Could someone tell me how they compare tension wise with say Super Slinkys. I've been using 009s Slinkys for years and have just started experimenting with better strings. I'd heard that the Pyramids play like lighter gauge strings (but presumably this only applies to the wound ones?). If so is it like going down a quarter or half size?

3 Euros a set sounds great. Smile

Elderly Instruments sells them for $8.40 a set, so not much savings there. There are not many web vendors that sell these strings and Elderly and JustStrings have the lowest prices I have found.

I was using 9's for a while, and mostly pure blues or slinkies. my left hand has a huge scar where the tendons were burned through and stretched back together after my accident. so, my point is, I was using 9's on my teles and 10's on my strats since I play so much and my hand was feeling the pains. well, since I've tried the burnished and pyramids I've bumped them back up to 10's and 11's. I know it's not a psychological thing, because my hand really feels it when there's too much tension.

so there's my testimony to the lower tension. thanks, chrissy, I'll do the math on that site's pricing and hopefully it works out. I do wish toyz carried em, too, george, but I doubt he'd sell enough of em to sell em bulk. who knows, tho.

Why have I never heard this before? If you buy a case (10 sets) you get a discount? What the hell have I been paying for the past 10 years?

As far as the Pyramids in bulk discount, this might be a little harder for exactly the reasons Telepicker mentioned. Shops always try to sell them for top dollar. That's why I've felt juststrings.com is a good source and a good deal.

But now I'm not so sure...

I have to disagree with you on this one Alex. I actually purchased most of my Maxima strings from them, and they were pretty cheap. I should have bought more since there will be no more Maxima gold strings made Frown I haven't purchased from them in over a year I think, but I was very happy with their prices and service.

Hmmm, you guys have my interest in these strings.
The fact that they have less tension may work great for me, especially on certain guitars...

I've been using D'Addario XL's 10-46 for a long time. I like the snap and overall tone of these strings. Do the Pyramids have that same nice snap as the D'Addarios? Geez, I can't remember if the D'Addarios are plated or pure nickel, I know that may have something to do with it too. I've only seen about a million packs and I can't recall - DUH Confused

Well Troy, before I moved to Pyramids two years ago I used to play the D'Addario's, so I hope I can describe this well for you.

Pyramids are pure nickel roundwounds whereas the D'addarios's are a nickel plated steel string (like most regular strings nowadays.)

The steel in them will actually make for a brighter more "zingy" tone, espoecially when they are fresh on. The Pyramids in contrast won't seem quite as bright but have a nice full, chunky sound to them. The sound is also more consistent over time.

I believe you're a single coil guy aren't you? I'd get a set of Pyramids (or other pure nickel roundwounds) and try them out just to see if you like what they do to your sound. I feel the Pyramids are a good example of that type of string should you want to stick to them.

Chrissy, yes I am a single coil guy.

Thanks for the info, I will have to check out the Pyramids. I don't know of any stores around here that carry them so I will have to order a pack in due time.

Maybe the brightness of the steel plate is what I like, but I'll certainly give the Pyramids a shot.

There seem to be TWO different types of Pyramid Pure Nickel Roundwound.

The ones I've used for years (bought in person & mail-order from UK at just over £5 a set) have a dark GREEN & white pack, (similar to the pack shown on the US Pyramid site, like the upper pic below) and say "handwound". These are great, VERY bendy (equivalent 'bendiness'/low tension to DR Pure Blues & Tite Fit, far bendier than Ernie Ball, Fender etc.) and have silver-plated plain strings, which don't seem to corrode anywhere near as much as plain steel, I find I can use a set for a month or more, as opposeds to a week or two max with cheaper strings.

(N.B. : - I sweat 'orrible stuff, so religiously clean my strings with 'FastFret" immediately after every gig. If I forget, even just overnight, I have to bin the strings the next day, whatever brand)

Anyway, the ones advertised for around 3 Euros (actually 3.11) on places like Musikhaus
appear to have a blue & white pack, no mention of "handwound" - is this new packaging? Are we sure these are the same strings? No mention of the 'handwound' or green pack on the German Pyramid site, only the blue pack ones shown/mentioned...

The green pack ones I have used, great:-

THe blue pack ones advertised for around $3:-

Can any of you regular users or players living in Germany shed any light on this?

Would hate to have Teddy get a shipload of them in, only to find the blue pack ones are different or not as good...

P.S. Teddy:- did the hungry rodent problem get fixed yet? still need to sort out those rat-eaten (& wrong guage) DR Pure Blues... Roll Eyes

Hey Cat,

I'm glad you brought this up. Having used the blue packaged one'S and not finding anything else here I was a bit surprised when I heard about these other strings last year (saw them an Custom Sounds and on the US site).

Problem is, I can't compare them, 'cos I 've only used the blue one's.

Do you have the choice in Hong Kong, or could this be an export thing with different packaging? What we need is someone to compare both. I'll willingly pop a blue set in the post to you if you want to do the comparison. Or is anyone in posession of both types.

TP, that's why I asked you to tell me what exactly was on the package you have a few days ago. Perhaps you could chip in so we know what type/package you have,

In the meantime I'll drop Pyramid a line in Germany and see what they say.

The green ones are the real deal, those everybody is raving about. The handmade ones. The blueones are machine made. They are good strings at a very nice price, at least over here in Europe. However they are far from the Green ones. I asked Harri from Custom-Sounds on this very same subject ... and also bought some sets of the blue ones just to try. I am now back in the fold with the Green ones.
