I have a line on a used one for a good price.
It comes with the factory installed pickup.
I need it for live use primarily, also for acoustic jams.
I want something that's projects pretty well, mostly for strumming, occasionally finger-picking.

Anybody here have one or tried one?

I've read the reviews and they are generally good with a few caveats, but for the price supposedly very good.

THX!

I have an entry level Larravee but I cannot remember the model. Dreadnought, satin finish, mahogany back and sides, and I believe a spruce top. No pickup. Basically a stripped down model. I absolutely love it. One of the best purchases i have ever made. I installed a Schatten Design pickup and it sounds awesome.

Thx for the report CW.
Can you take a look in the soundhole and check the model #?

Hey Paul,
If I didn't have a Martin or needed a 2nd acoustic, I would go for a Larry. The seem like a good cross between a Martin and a Taylor for balanced sound. It would likely sound great live. The only concern that I have about them is that there is an opinion out there that they do not let the ebony dry long enough which eventually presents fret issues (The frets end up sticking out a little d/t shrinkage.) The larrys that I have played have been pretty good.
Good luck

I would have already checked the model number but it is at the office. I'll look at it in the morning and report back if you can wait that long.

I have been considering a Larrivee, specifically the L03. The D03 has a slightly narrower nut (1 11/16 vs 1 3/4 for the L03). BFD.

The Larry's I have played have all sounded and played very nice. Solid build, no frills at the 03 level.

I will probably end up adding a K&K pup and using an external preamp. I just hate cutting a big hole in an acoustic guitar for a built in preamp.

GOT THE GTR!

So psyched. It sounds like a piano, with lots of chime and shimmer. It's fairly loud and punchy as well. The bass is not particularly warm, but it isn't lacking either. Not as beefy as a Martin, but I think it's gonna be great for live gigs or when you're playing with a band or other acoustics and you need to cut thru. I believe it's a 2003 and it's just about mint. Haven't tried the pickup but he said it works. Gotta' reach in there to change the battery, that's a PITA. Really well taken care of with OHSC. Plus it was fairly priced, so I couldn't be happier.

Pics to follow....

Congrats on the score, Paul! What sort of system is in there?

My new Larrivee is an LV-O3RE. It has an L.R. Baggs Element, with the three band EQ and the mids notch and phase reversal... it's cool and versatile and all that... but I'll tell you what, it in no way packs the punch and presence of my old D-03 with the aftermarket Fishman Prefix (no side panel and EQ, just the pickup system itself). I really don't know how much of a big deal foregoing cutting a chunk out of the wood is with an instrument that's DI'ed, or how much of a factor a butt-simple circuit with no tonal options is... and people can rag on piezos all they'd like... BUT, through a DI to a PA, that old D-03 with the Fishman Prefix quite soundly kicks the butt of the newer Larrivee with the Baggs system, in no uncertain terms. Folks comment in a postive way on the amplified tone of the old battered D-03 at "acoustic" venues all the time. Both of these instruments have mahogany necks, spruce tops, and rosewood back and sides.

Larrivees in generaL...at least the ones I've played...are amazing instruments let alone for the money...

I have an OM-03R which I chose over a whole bunch of more expensive acoustics...including some Martins and Lakewoods...

I chose it after playing Lensmans D-03 which floored me...

I have an AER AK15+ which is a dual pup system made by the amp company...it's very precise and accurate sounding if not a bit steile but I found warming it up with a buffer or a comp. works wonders...

Chow,
Seegs

Thanks Tim!
I think it has a sitka spruce top and the rosewood sides you speak of.

Here's the new baby:

The pickup may be the same as yours:

I'd like it to be simple as possible and it's obviously not, but I'll give it a shot and see how it sounds thru a PA.

I'm awfully happy with the acoustic sounds it makes and hopefully that will be conveyed thru the pickup. If not I may look into something different, we'll see.

Thx to all for the advice.
