Well, I went and blew my damn speaker on my Peavey Classic 30, only had the amp on 7 (of 12) on the clean channel - lame. Anyway, anyone have suggestions for a good replacement speaker for a 1x12 combo? I've been told a Celestion Vintage 30 will give me more bottom end and more power handling due to a big magnet, anyone have experience with these? Any other good speaker options? Since this amp is modeled somewhat after an AC30 (and since I've also got a Fender Super Reverb) I'm looking for something that will enhance the Vox-ness of the Classic 30's tone. Thanks!! PS: Any opinions on Eminence speakers? They're cheaper, are they any good? Thanks!

I use an Alnico Weber Blue Dog in mine. Suits it perfectly.

I have a ceramic Blue Dog in my tweed Deluxe. It's rated at 30 watts,is reasonably priced, & is based on the Vox Bulldog speakers. I love it. I haven't tried the AlNiCo,but I'd imagine it would be even smoother than the ceramic. It costs more,I know that.

Thanks guys, I've heard/read that the Blue Dogs are great sounding, but I'm hesitant to put in such a low wattage speaker (30w) in a 30 watt amp since I just blew one. I've had several people tell me the Celestion Vintage 30 is louder, has more bottom end and will handle more power and is therefore good for single-speaker combos. Any thoughts?

I have played mine at high levels (10) for extended periods of time and barely even get speaker distortion. I'm not sure how the ceramics would do though. I'm not too familiar with the handling characteristics between the two or whether it is even relevant. I don't think you would have a problem. What was the original speaker, anyways? I think the vintage 30 might be a little too much beef and a little sterile sounding for the classic 30. The alnico is what I feel suits it best, because alnicos are traditionally a vox speaker, and this amp is undoubtedly modeled after a vox.

Yeah, I want to accentuate that Vox tone as well since my other amp is a Super Reverb...unfortunately what I did to blow the speaker was to crank up the bass on the 30 to try and get closer to the Fender sound I was used to and I think that's how I blew it at relatively low volume. The stock speaker is made by Eminence I think and I'm told it wasn't too bad, I was just trying to get more bass response and volume from the amp than it's designed for. Maybe instead of a higher rated speaker like the V30 I should get a Vox-y speaker for the amp and then an extension cabinet with another good speaker, but then it's running into too much $$$ for my budget. Oh well, I guess everything is a compromise on some level, my main concern is not to spend $140 on a Weber and then blow it! Thanks again, any other expertise is much appreciated.

Thanks again guys for turning me on to WeberVST - I ended up going with one, those guys really know their speakers and very nice guys as well, call them and they will help you find exactly what you want. Also, compared to Celestion, their speakers seem to be equally or better made and considerably cheaper. I ended up going with a C12NB-50 with a larger voice coil to increase power handling from 25 to 50w. This speaker combines Jensen-type construction (I've always preferred Fender amps) with a 'British' sounding speaker cone and large magnet like the Vintage 30, kind of a best of both worlds (I hope!!) with nice round bass of a Jensen and chimey upper mids of a Vintage 30. Handbuilt by the designers, and all for $85! We'll see how it sounds, from all the reviews on their site it sounds like they are setting a new standard.

Just played through my Classic 30 at a jam last night, first time out with the new Weber speaker after about a month of break-in....NICE!! The amp sounds so much better, really good fat tone clean or dirty, great sustain, very rich sound. And this thing is now so loud, I had it on '4' and my Strat was really cutting through over drums, bass, B-3, and another guitarist playing humbuckers through a 5150 4x12 stack!! A really good way to upgrade this amp, new tubes are next but I'm satisfied right now....finally!

Paul - Thanks for the review. I've been thinking about replacing the stock speaker in my Laney VC30, and it looks like the Weber would be a good choice.
