Has anybody's pedalboard CHANGED?!?!
It would be a far shorter list to ask for those whose board HASN"T changed to step forward.... ;-} Mine is changing again as I type this. I played a Tonebone Classic at Sam Ash yesterday. Stock American Standard Strat => TB Classic => Fender DRRI (at VERY low volume). Most impressive pedal and it will be on my board in a matter of days... George, do you have casters under your pedalboard or what? You don't make your wife carry it to your gigs do you? Wow...everyone has such nice pedalboards here. I'm embarrassed to show my home-made jobby.

Hey TD
Is that Tonebone gonna kick that DR off your board? "There is a tide in the affairs of men that, if caught at the swell, leads on to fame and fortune; but if missed, returns life to the shallows." - William Shakespeare |

quote: The TTE comes with a carry case and is not velcroed like the rest to the board. If you look where the gooseneck lamp attaches to the board there is an amp handle there so I carry the board like you carry an amp. I bet your board is slamming brother so SHOW US NOW! PLEASE I have seen alot of great looking pedal boards but thought the pricing was kinda high for what they are but the prices seem to be coming down now that there are more companies building them. I have only recently started seeing goose neck lamps and I think a light is as necessary for a board as the pedals are. Anyway, that is why I built my own a few years back. I got to try this monster out today and holy crap does it sound great! Well my wah sounds like crap so I guess I will stick the Teese Picture wah in it's place. I also am not sure what is up with the Rotosphere. When I use the TTS after the Roto the noise of the Roto is horrible. It wasn't like that with the TTS before the Roto but then the TTS would bring the Roto to clipping so it didn't work that way either. OK time to rip the Roto apart to figure out what is wrong there. |

Beckanon: If I had the tools and the talent, trust me - mine would be homemade! If you're interested, check out Musician's Friend - they've been blowing out the standard model Pedaltrain (12.5" x 22") for $79.99 - and that's with the hard shell case! I just got one a few weeks ago and I love it. greatbuy at that price too.
John: I picked up the Classic yesterday after all and gigged it last night. There are alot of tones in this thing! I think I may have been more impressed with some of the low gain tones I got out of it! I had a chance today to spend a little time with it and check out some of the sample settings. Frankly, I thought most of the sample settings kind of sucked - although a few were nice. I found the midrange switch introduced too much of a mid bump for my tastes. 7 and 12 db boosts at 360 hz is a bit much. Maybe the 7db boost would be ok if I boosted the bass and treble to better match it, but it sounded a bit congested the one time I tried it last night. I found settings that worked real well by keeping the midrange and treble switches flat. It sounds like it introduces a small amount of mids even in the flat position - which is OK for me as this is a lead pedal. I was amazed how well the thing cleaned up - all in the top third of the volume control too. I ended up setting it like this: Treble switch: Flat Mid switch: Flat Gain switch: High Treble: 11:30 Bass: 1:00 Filter: 12:00 Drive: 12:00 It may still need a little tweaking, but so far, that's where I'm at with it. Very cool pedal, John, and I can see why you've had one on your board for a while now. One question - What is the stock tube (Sovtek?) and did you change it out for something "better"? Mapleneck: Yes, the DRD is the one to take a breather for now since I don't need two high gain pedals. I still have the BBOD on my board for the lower gain lead thing. The TB Classic will serve as the high gain lead thing. This message has been edited. Last edited by: Tone Dog, "I've spent most of my money on booze, women and guitar gear. Congrats on the new Pedal Tone Dog! A pedal with that much control does take some time to figure out what works best with your setup.
I set my Top end and Mid boost Flat as well and most of the Time I set the Drive gain switch to medium, I use the gain switch a lot depending on the Song we play. The Stock tube in the newer pedals is the JJ ECC83S, I've tried the 12AX7EH and it does alter it a little but ended up putting the JJ tube back in. Anyway after a few days with the classic you will get the feel of how the controls interact with each other. |

I don't know about you guys, but my pedalboard really only changes in terms of overdrives. My modulation/delay/compression pedals remain pretty static (though my GAS for a Red Witch may eventually change that). But overdrives are such a subjective thing, and all of us need several textures these days to get through most gigs. Also, finding the right OD to go with a given amp is such a process of trial-and-error. Since I've been using a stereo pair of clean solid state amps (JC-120's), finding a higher-gain pedal to go with my LTD has been a bitch. Right now I've got a SansAmp GT2, which works pretty well, but I anticipate replacing it with a Mos, a Tonebone or a modded DS-1 in the next few months (I just replaced my Corolla with a much more equipment-friendly Ford Explorer, so my pedal-buying budget is a bit less solvent). By the way, those of you who've built your own boards, as I have: what do you carry them in? Mine is about a foot tall (angled), so I've got it in this enormous plastic box I found at Walmart. It's pretty annoying.

So he turned around and looked at them, and pronounced a curse on them in the name of the LORD. And two female bears came out of the woods and mauled forty-two of the youths." |

quote: Thanks, John. Yes, I can see where I may end up going back and forth between medium and high gain settings. If it's not too much of a pain and I can leave the other settings alone, I could definitely live with that. I need to hear how it sounds for a lower gain lead sound instead of the BBOD. Nothing against the BJF peds - they're great and have been favorites for a long time. But I have to admit that I kind of like the idea of just having two pedals that have several sounds in each that will cover all my overdrive needs easily. Well, like anything else, I'll have to use it for a while to get the full flavor of what it can do before deciding on anything for sure. But I was goofing with it again last night into the Alessandro Rottweiler. I pushed the Treble control back a touch to 11:00 and it sounded GREAT. It was at very low volume at home so that is likely to change once it gets cranked up a bit, but I was getting the most inspiring lead tone I've had in quite some time using the G&L ASAT. Sorry, Idlewilde - I didn't intend to hijack your thread with Tonebone talk. I will get a new picture of my board since it has changed (yet again) and post it shortly! quote: Well, I'm glad you (and others, I'm sure) are getting a kick out of my escapades. I had to redo my pedalboard again to get the Tonebone on there. But I used the opportunity to clean up some mistakes from my first pass at setting up the Pedaltrain. It's smaller than my last board so the space has to be allotted a little more carefully and the layout is more critical. It makes alot more sense now and I am much happier with it. I have to get a picture.... "I've spent most of my money on booze, women and guitar gear. The rest I've just wasted." |
