Man, I can smell the Avalon Mississippi sharecroppers dirt. IMHO this is the greatest bluesman EVAH! I know everyone has their favorites, but there's something about his style-sweet- but damn is he the REAL DEAL. There's 200 years of working the fields right there.

That was great. More music to buy...
I usually don't sit thru an entire youtube song when somebody posts a link, but I couldn't stop listening. |

He's one of my favorites too!
Every time I play "Candy Man", my students all go nuts! Another example of how people who would never buy a John Hurt CD at a store, will LOVE it if they just actually listened to it. Live music is still 100% better than any recording, for this. I'll share a favorite, too. Here's another of my favorites, Joseph Spence. He was a great improvisor, and player. Very free and happy sounding, like John Hurt. That's what made me mention Joseph. The story of what Sam Charters had to go through to find Joseph is pretty cool, in and of itself. Here's a clip of him: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NORVG9cVyFA&feature=related Here's a little info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joseph_Spence_(musician) |
