Thanks, Dan – good to see everyone here too.
Same ol’ boogie on this end – still gigging 2-3 nights most weeks and my rig has been stable for the past 6 months: Daphne Blue Strat with Suhr FL’s (Standard Wind) and the Black ’96 Music Man Axis Sport S/S/H with Suhr FL (Low Wind) in the neck and middle and a Suhr DSV+ ‘bucker in the bridge (I added a toggle for splitting). The Axis is my “go to” these days. On a Pedaltrain Jr: Barber Tone Press Fulltone Fat-Boost 2 Paul Cochrane Tim Butler Tube Driver Boss DD-3 Delay. Amp is a 2x12 Dr Z Mazerati with Celestion Blues. I’ve been real happy with this setup and can get most anything I need tonally so I haven’t tried any new gear since settling on this rig. "I've spent most of my money on booze, women and guitar gear. Wow! I bet you're digging that new rig. Back to more pedals? I totally get that. I'm an "Amp" guy. But, pedals are fun! Plus, you can get a lot of "extras" with quality pedals.

I am glad to see Tone back.
I actually screwed him up with a Dr Z 2-10 he ordered that took for ever to come in and he had to bail and do something else... I thought I had ruined that friendship for all of you forever....he still hates me ! hehe but Im glad he is back for all of you ...his knowledge is invaluable... |

The Guytron I believe is gone. I seen he had it for sale and I was interested but it had already been sold. I still want to try on of those someday but for now I am totally content with my Budda.

All:
Thanks for welcoming me back - you guys are too cool. Dana is correct - the Guytron had to go because I needed the $$ for other stuff. I love that amp but wanted to go back to a simpler rig. When you tear it down, move it and set it up again as much as I do, it makes sense. As for pedals, well, yes, they are fun, but it all comes down to volume management. I need certain amounts of drive and I just can't the gainier stuff at club volume - even with a 35 watt amp. The Guytron was able to do it and I only used a clean boost with that amp - very sweet. But in the end, I wanted a greater range of tones and an easier rig to lug around so it was back to pedals for me. Ted: It's all good, bro. Necessity being what it was at the time, I had no choice. No hard feelings on this end. And in Ted's defense, he did offer me a very sweet deal to try to make up for the hassle. I just wasn't in a position to take advantage of it at the time. TD,
I am really interested in the Suhr Fls. If you don't mind, how would you compare them to Lollar Tweeds? I have a set of the Tweeds coming, and once I'm familiar with them, I think I'll be able to better assess what the FLs can do. Thanks in advance. |

I dig both the FLS and the Tweeds. As a quick point to note, the differences between the FL low wound and the FL standard wound is not all that significant. In fact, the low wounds, which you would expect to be a little clearer and snappier from the lower winding actually sound a little fuller and warmer in the Axis Sport than the standard wound set in the Strat sounds. But I don’t think it’s the pickups - I think that’s the guitars, the point being that the difference between them, whatever there is, was eaten up by the tonal differences of the guitars. The output difference isn’t very noticeable either (a .5K ohms difference really isn’t worth arguing over, in my book). Compared to the Tweeds, I definitely like the slightly beefier push of the FL standard bridge over the weaker Tweed, but for neck pickups, I’d have to say that in the end, I prefer the tone of the Tweed neck slightly more than the neck FL. The Tweed neck is slightly softer and warmer overall (thanks to the low gauss of the AL2 magnets) and I found it a bit easier to grok some of those classic, cleaner Strat neck tones with it – not that it was all that difficult with the FLs because it isn’t. If the Suhr and Lollars weren’t opposite wound to each other, I may have stuck with the Tweed neck and the FLs in the middle and bridge. But as a set, I chose the FLs (either version) and haven’t felt the urge to swap them out in favor of anything else yet. For me, the FLs were a shade better suited for overdriven work (mainly from the drive) whereas the Tweeds seemed to favor the cleaner sounds a little more – although I’ve used both sets for both overdriven and dirtier stuff without any problems, just slightly different amp and/or pedal eq. I play with some amount of drive almost all of the time and rarely play totally, 100% clean. But if I did more of that, I might be tempted to go with the Tweeds because they really played nicely for me on the cleaner, airier stuff. I think a lot of players might find the FLs to be a better choice since they are more traditional than the Tweeds - AL5 mags wound to a slightly hotter vintage spec so you get mostly traditional tones but with a bit more push and that is what really swung me over to the FLs. I felt at times that I was getting a little lost in the mix and wanted a little more girth and a little more push without sacrificing too much of the traditional sound. If the FLs didn’t (mostly) favor the traditional tones, they wouldn’t work for me. "I've spent most of my money on booze, women and guitar gear. The rest I've just wasted." |

Thanks for the low down on those PUs. I was seriously considering the FLs, and the Fralin Blues Specials, too.
I figured that they all had to be very similar. So, it's cool to hear from someone who has experience with them all. Just another reason why this place is so cool. Guys like you, who freely share their knowledge and experience. Hear that "Lurkers"? Come out and pla-ay! |
