I thought a lot of the BJF talk was hype..I got a Dyna Red a couple of days ago..I have to say it is a step above any distortion pedal I've played through and it is very quiet......For a lot of us pedal snobs looking for the perfect tone, a Dyna Red should be on everyones pedalboard..It has a special quality of blending so well with my amp..Soloing tones are great in the neck and the bridge and rhythm playing is clear and articulate. Not overly raspy or a piercing presence to compensate for what a lot of other distortion pedals are lacking..Very little if no hum comes out of my amp with the gain dimed out..It's the perfect sounding distortion..

Well said PD...
I have always found BJFE pedals to be most impressive when I tried to turn them off.... Wink

Pauley, I've never tried the Dyna Red, how's the sustain?

Very good sustain..I really find no weaknesses in this pedal..I do run the gain all the way up but it's just perfect..You don't need more gain than what it's designed to do..You could play a Blues gig with it or rock out on Zeppelin..I even goofed around stacking it with another high gain pedal and it sounded good although I prefer it by itself..It's just less tap dancing..Now I can see why people run like 5 or 6 BJF pedals in a row..

the dyna red distorsion is really impressive. combined with my analog man beano boost, it just sounds like jimmy page, and i don't have a les paul yet, just PAF like humbuckers on my Ibanez.
this is THE distorsion from my point of view ( wonderful in the clean channel of my Laney VC30 )

The Dyna Red sounded great when I stacked it with my FD-2 for a very nice high gain tone! Good luck with the DR pedal, BJ's pedals are some of the best out there!

Inow most of you use the DR into a clean amp. Has anyone tryied it into a dirty amp say a Marshall or something similar? If not When the Tour Box gets to MI that test will be applied.

Pauly, congrats. It's a great pedal. I had mine for a couple of years but had to sacrifice it for my Rt.66 amp purchase. I wish I still had it...(I think Corleone is getting good use out of it now).

I was always impressed that a distortion voiced sort of aggressively like that in the upper mids and treble region was never noisy, as you pointed out. Dynamics with guitar volume control, picking attack, and string to string definition were the best I have ever experienced. I only used the gain on mine somewhere around 9 to 10 oclock...that was plenty for me and it produced a nice pleasant overdrive/distortion sound. The best tight bass attenuation as well...no flubbiness. I think that's (and not the treble) the secret to the pedal's clarity.

I use the Dyna Red with small amps that are on the verge of breaking up, but most of the time I use my Allen Sole-Mate (Marshall pre-amp in a pedal)as my basic dirty tone and add the DRD when I want more distortion. I think it sounds great into the Sole-Mate. Actually I like it better than into the amp alone.

Isn't it amazed how differentout settings for the same pedal can be? I think if I ever set my DRD at full gain the world might explode! Red Face

My amo is always breaking up a bit and my fave setting is with all 3 knobs around 9:30. I sometimes have trouble balancing the tone knob just right to get the right balance of a singing top end, but not too bright and a low end that still cuts and has bite. That's about the sweet spot for me.

The DRD (#009) has been my main higher gain OD for a couple of years now. Also great with my Klon after it.

The DRD remains one of my favorites and is what i am currently using for the higher gain lead tones when I need that sort of thing. I have run the gain as high as 2:00, but find that somewhere in the 12:00-1:00 range is where I seem to find the most useful tones for what I need. The Tone control can be tricky. Mine usually ends up around 9:30-10:00 depending on the room and amp I'm using. Any higher and it gets to crispy for me. I also use the BBOD set for a lighter, more blusey sort of lead tone.

DRD changed everything here. My excitement is probably thought of as hype. It changed my life! BJFEver baby!!!

The one on my board is set low (like in the WormWagon board pic) to be used as a pre drive boost for the big old high gain Randall. And if I were to go thru someother amps clean channel, I'd crank the DRD's gain to about 2oclock and I'm good to go.

yeah, it's those damn "disciples" you got to watch out for. spreading their cult wherever they go, and suckering in poor deluded souls (to coin a batman phrase) with the promise of tonal nirvana and everlasting sonic enhancement.
