The Adams Family.
Adams Family Values.
Alien.
Aliens.

I was working on a project called ADMS when the Adams Family came out. Of course we had a poster in the lab. I love Joan Cusack in Adams Family Values.

For recent thrillers, I really liked Sixth Sense, the Ring and 28 Days Later.

for older scary movies, check out one from the 70's called "The Changeling" with George C. Scott. Not gory at all, but pleasantly creepy.

And as he was going up the road, some youths came from the city and mocked him, and said to him, “Go up, you baldhead! Go up, you baldhead!” So he turned around and looked at them, and pronounced a curse on them in the name of the LORD. And two female bears came out of the woods and mauled forty-two of the youths."

There's one that I believe is entitled "In the shadow of the vampire" which is pretty scary. Basically the idea is that when the old movie Nosferatu was filmed that they used a real vampire & that's why the actors seemed so scared. They had a very real reason to be. I recommend it.

The Changeling is a good movie!

My Favorite Halloween movies are:

The Beyond, Fulci's best movie! Gorey, and one of my faves!
City of the Living Dead, another Fulci film.
The Dead Trilogy, classic!
The Brood, creepy Cronenberg film.
The Begotten, silent film that is just plain disturbing.
Susperia, surreal spooky.
The Thing, Carpenter's version!
More that I can't remember.
Check out Ju-on: The Grudge, which is a great Japanese horror film. It gave me the creeps! They made an americanized version with Sarah M. Gellar, which will be coming out soon.

texas chainsaw massacre....the original of course...
nightmare before christmas fits well with halloween and christmas.
i saw american werewolf in london for the first time a week or so ago and loved it.
i want to watch the Ring and the blair witch project again because they are two of the only movies that i thought were actually scary...
last christmas i watched like 20 christmas films to make it more meaningful and im trying to do that again with halloween aswell so it makes it feel like it did when you were a kid. its hard to replace that excitement we had when we were that young.

Oh, yeah, I forgot about Suspiria! I saw that when I was a teenager. It came out around the same time as Phantasm, a movie with similar production values. Something about the "low-budget-Italian" feel of that movie is really creepy. The soundtrack, by the goblins, is great, too.

One of my scariest movie experiences happened around '74 on Canal Street in New Orleans (a generally seedy street, kind of like Hollywood Blvd. in the 80's). A friend and I ducked into the Joy Theatre to get out of a downpour, and the only movie showing was the original "Texas Chainsaw Massacre." It was like $1.00 to get in, so the theatre was a haven for winos and other homeless guys. The seats were all torn and there was trash everywhere and the theatre was filled with weird, phlegm-hacking street spectors. The ambiance definitely added to the impact of the film.

My wife and I walked by a theater on Canal street walking back from the French quarter one night a couple of years ago. Very seedy looking place. I guess you could say we walked pretty fast. The next night we took a cab. Big Grin

We were staying at the Radisson which is only a couple blocks away but still too far of a walk at night.

Yes, that's the exact theatre! It's across Canal from the Saenger, a couple of blocks south of the Radisson. It's been a movie theatre since I was a little kid.

Dana--if you make it back to New Orleans, you must call and get the "locals" tour. It's the least I can do to thank you for the excellent boost pedal.

Heh, Heh! I know that Theatre too! I was just in Nola this summer, and most of the french quarter is seedy. Btw, I love Italian Horror films, and they're alot of good ones out there. Herny: protrait of a serial killer is good too! Deranged is awesome, and is a good alt. for the Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
