I'm thinking about snagging an Envelope-Filter / Auto-Wah. Which ones should I be looking at?

Though I've never tried one, I've heard nothing but praise for the EMMA DiscumBOBulator...

I thought the auto wah function on the Line 6 FM-4 came closer to a real deal old skool mutron then the robotalk I a/b'd it with did. It killed the robotalk in every way; the sample and hold function sounded better to me as well.

As far as new stuff, I only know to stay away from the current BOSS autowah. It sounds terrible!

I have an electro-Harmonix Bass Balls that is pretty cool and really cheap. It sounds kind of like a cross between an envelope filter and a talkbox. Cool but maybe not what you are looking for. Good Luck!

I like my Maxon AF 9, or vintage Ibanez AF 9 if you can find one.

had an Emma Discombobulator in and liked it a lot but not enough to keep it...

not a deal breaker but it did seem to change my clean tone in bypass...

Tonefactor/Mojohand Analog Filter 442. Copy of the DOD 440. Good for funk, reggae and synthy type stuff. Small footprint and fairly affordable. I would imagine that the BYOC Filter is something similar.

No love for the Boss AW3, MXR Auto Q, or EHX Q-Tron(s)? The Boss is looking pretty good with the extra goodies - the vowel sounds.

Also, which pedal do you think sounds the most like a regular wah (a very "quacky" regular wah)?

I've had the Mojo Hand, and I prefer the Emma. It seems to track better and maybe be more dialable.
If you're a noob to the EF thing, the Mojo Hand maybe cheaper used and maybe the way to go.

I'm kind of an EF snob because I use it with bass and I think bass makes EF more crucial because the wrong EF can rob you of low end or give you less control of the bass.

Come to think of it, the Emma is better on bass, but for guitar, I think they're pretty close.

I agree with porkchop about the Mojo Hand on bass, it just doesn't kick it. Although they do make a version specifically for bass which is presumably optimised in some way.

What I like about the Mojo Hand is that it is capable of doing quite funky stuff as well as more textural stuff. If I had had bought it just as a auto wah I might be disappointed, as the envelope attack might be considered just a tad too slow.

That doesn't mean that it isn't capable of autowah sounds, just that it might not be for someone looking to use it exclusively as such.

To be honest with you I liked the emma and the newer DOD ones the best. The emma is more adjustable but for most people I think the DOD will do it fine. I go back and forth between the two and I'm using the DOD righ now...it's just more "rich" sounding?

The Moog one was o.k. but all moog pedals have that stupid "drive" knob that effects your sound even when the pedal is bypassed. Q-tron was noisy and lacked the rich sound I get with the dod. The T-wah is good too but it effected my tone in bypass...The DOD 440 is pretty weak in comparison to the others, it's kinda a mild filter sound in my opinion.
