I need a little help in looking for something that gives my Maz 18 a little echo.
I was gonna get the little lanilei reverb pedal, but realized at high gain, it'd be pushed outta the tone. i have tried the Line6 Delay modeler, but realized it squashes my tone too much.
So, like guys like EVH and Eric Johnson, i thought an echoplex clone would do the trick. i love the sound of my amp/guitar/tone combo and want nothing to mess that up. Yet, i do want something that's vibey. nothing to big either, so the "Plex" is outta the question besides being outta production. nor anything delay like. I want something vibey not really hifi.
thanks.

hey, i don't have any first hand experience of these, but you might want to try out a hughes and kettner replex. i see a bunch of folks are using them now (doyle bramhall II, in particular), and i've kind of had my eye on one. also, if you're going straight for reverb with lots of 'vibe,' check out a fender reverb tank. those are pretty damn handy, and you can really make your tone swim. good luck...

I retired my EP2 and bought a Replex. Its an excellent clone. Nothing is going to beat the real thing, but if you need something you can count on, can be installed on your pedalboard, and sounds close enough that people wouldn't notice the difference, then go for it. Its pricey, but worth it in the long run. The reverb sucks in it, I just turn the knob to 0 and use it when I need a slight volume boost. I can do this because I set the output volume slightly higher than the bypassed volume.
The replex is probably going to be your best bet, as I haven't experienced first hand, or heard through others, anything better. Hope that helps!

I also use the Replex. It`s an excellent choice for that trippy Floyd stuff - Echoes, Shine On you Crazy Diamond. It really does more than just adding repeats...
Hey guys, thanks for the replex info. Can you tell me if its true bypass?

According to the box/manual, it is. But then I heard somewhere that the rotosphere says that its true bypass but it isn't. ?? I guess I'll trust the box and say that it is.
Where can you buy "the plex" at?

Analog Man has them for $845.

Is a tape-based echo really that much of a pain in the butt? Does it degrade you overall tone when it isn't in use? The replex sounds nice, but from what I've heard, it doesn't sound as lush as a tape-based echo unit.

There'll be lots of upturned sneering noses at this one, but I use an Ibanez EM5 Echomachine with my Maz 18. Sounds great!

You'll get no such snobbery from me. If it sounds good, more power to you.

I have never used one but everybody raves about them...Go for it! There should be no problem reselling it if you do not like it.

For a great amp like that, go for a true bypass effect. If you have cash and don't mind about carrying a large box... go for the Hughes & Kettner Replex. This thing makes sweet, phat but natural and vibey echoes !!!
The Replex mixes really the best of tube and digital worlds.
The only problem you could encounter is when switching back to bypass, you end up considering your tone very thin !!!

I agree with everything you say, Dumbo...The difference between the bypassed signal and the effect modes is in fact the only problem with this unit. How did you solve that?? I like to set up the Replex for long delay times and with the vintage factor turned up. Out of this world!! I have never heard anything that compares. I once had an Echolette Tube Tape Echo and it was a pain in the ass to use. It was noisy as hell and the sound of the preamp sucked. I prefer the Replex.

Since the reverb in it is useless (to me), I turn the reverb knob all the way down, and use that for my uneffected signal.

Hmm...that`s the obvious solution. The thing is I just don´t want to use the preamp of the Replex all the time... Oh well, nothing dramatic!!
Thanks Soundguy.

actually the reverb tank on my Maz is pretty noisy. turning it down alleviates the problem but its quite a shame...
