Howdy! I've been using the (red) Behringer direct box for a few years now. She's been great but lately I've noticed some less than stellar performance coming from her direction (ie--tone I am not happy with). I've decided it's time to upgrade to a SHO NUFF d.i. box. What are you using or what is really good on the market? I'd like to stay in the $150-250 price range.
Palmer is the king for DI-ing amps. They aren't cheap though.
Radial makes really good DI boxes, but I'm not sure if they make a cab simulator type DI.
May I ask why you don't want to mic your amp?

It is reactive unit that plugs into your amp's output AND the speaker(s)' of the amp as the reference reactive termination load. Since it's a reactive device rather than purely resistive, the signal coming out of the XLR output of the F.A.N.T.A. (to the mixing board or recording console) will sound like your amp and speakers rather than a hive of angry bees. Do bees get angry? Maeterlinck?
The TAD F.A.N.T.A. is $110 to $120 USD.
Radial JUST released a NEW product based on the same principle of the TAD F.A.N.T.A., btw. Can't remember the name of the freshly announced item.
Not to be a smartass, but did you try the Sennheiser E609 or E906 mic Will? Just hang them over your cab, and you're done. For me they work great. You don't have to aim them for half an hour to get it to sound good like an SM57, they don't need a stand. And for me they sound very natural, just like the amp does in the room.
Hey Guys, Thanks for the comments. Stax, I actually have NOT tried any of the Sennheiser stuff, but I will look into them. I've always done battle with the SM57. The little Berhinger box has done great for a few years, but it seems like it's dying. My next choice was the Radial--I think one of them does have a cab simulator. Thanks--you guys have given me some homework for sure!
I concur with Mr Stax. The Sennheiser e609 is the ONLY thing I will mic my amps with live. Much better sounding than a 57, but not any more expensive. Very neutral sounding.

These don't have the dummy load circuitry of their rackmount companions, so they are not nearly as expensive. I think mine was around $150, which is a fair price for a great DI with a killer miced cabinet emulator IMO.
I swear by that thing. I've had two other guitar players try to buy it from me in the last two weeks. I can't think of anything I would change about it. It just sounds great.
Those bright red, Flamed Maple Head Cabs Roccoforte used to use in their Ads,look really sweet! I'm surprised more amp builders haven't offered them. Maybe I should start making them custom, for people to put their chassis' in! LOL
I've used the PGA-05 ADIG-ST (rack) and the PDI-09 (backup) for about the past 5 years and they both do exactly what it says on the box, I haven't mic'd a cab up in years.

I am still a mic the amp guy. I have been wanting to try a E906. Anyone got one for sale for around $100? I've been using 57's for years with godd results. I spend my time at first finding the sweet spot and mark it with tape so I don't have to dick around every time I play.
A mic isn't really any harder to use than a DI box but you are getting the sound of your speakers which is a Huge part of your tone.

Are you interested in the e609 or the e906? Similar mics, but different. I haven't found anyone that really feels the 906 is that superior or worth the $.
I've got an extra 609 you could try out if you'd like.

I was wanting to check out the E906 as I had read that some like being able to switch between the different eq settings as the 609 could be harsh at times. Do you have an extra E609 to sell?
