I tried it out once with the tourbox but I mainly tried it at full gain and didn't mess with the dynamics control too much, lately this pedal has been on my mind and I'm thinking about how it sounds at medium gain settings and what that dynamics knob actually does?

It acts as a limiter with added distortion. You know how a limiter will just turn the volume down? The dynamics control limits/clips the signal in a variable way (more clipping/less clipping). Different from a limiter in that harmonics and sustain are created.

I can't give you any kind of technical answer ... all I know is that with the dynamics all the way counterclockwise, the tone is much more compressed and that's where the Santana and Dumbly tones live. My preference is to have the dynamics set all the way clockwise for a much more open, touch responsive tone. This gives me more great amp-like distortions from very light crunch to balls-out hot Marshally tones. BTW, my amp is a Carr Rambler ... your results may vary with something different.

I really love this pedal and find it to be the perfect board buddy for my TIM pedal.

counterclockwise softens the feel and clockwise tightens it up. I like to use it to match the pedal up to different amps. For instance through my Dr Z (which has a lot of natural compression) I'll run it higher, but through my Super Reverb (a tighter sounding amp) I like lower settings of the dynamics control.

All correct...

Yes it changes the dynamic response (compression/sustain) of the pedal and lets you match the pedal properly to the amp...

If youve played a drive with a diode switch its kind of like that , but its on a pot so you have the 'in between' variables............ every pedal should have this control Wink

SO would you say that with the dynamics knob fully CW it's a more dynamic pedal than other OD's with low compression/sustain characteristics?

Well its not any more or less dynamic - its just that you have control of it,,, its a very nice option to have if you play in different volume situations..... Quiet at home you can dial up some comp to match up to a clean amp, and then dial it the other way depending on how hot your amp is running , so you can keep a fairly consistent dynamic range between locations or picking/playing situations........ Im looking forward to the Burn SS (Single channel - Smaller box) or whatever David calls it

Me too! I'd really like to try that puppy out. I've got the LTD and it really is the perfect low-gain lead pedal for strats. I have been thinking about picking up an SS, but I beleive the consensus is that the BU has a more "real" sound, so I'd really like to hold out for that. Decisions, decisions...

I'm looking forward to that one too. I love my BUEQ but I really only need one channel and it's so big I use a Direct Drive on my pedalboard instead. A single channel Burn Unit in a DD size box would be ideal.

I think the dynamics knob adds a little more than just compression. CCW the sound is dumble-ish and CW it is marshally. But the CCW sound takes on more than just compression, to my ears there is added grit, drive and the tone is a bit darker with a different character. I like both extreme settings and would love a BU EQ model where one channel could be set for the dynamics knob CCW and the other CW...Dave?

Gainster rocks.

Could be, grit would also be compressed or evened out and compression also changes EQ depending on any filtering in there... and the controls are to some extent interactive..... but it could be adding either or.... but the main purpose of a dynamics control is to adjust the dynamics which are directly effected by limiting/compression
