Is it usual for the Q-Tron to sound like shit with OD. The Opposite of smooth.

From what I know of auto-filter, auto,-wah, enveloppe fiter...
Having too much gain in fornt of it ccan cause distortion... if that's your case try plugging it before your overdrive.
Also this effect is reacting to your playing dynamics, wich means it turns on or react when th elevel it sees gets passed a certain point wich you determine by one of the knob on the pedal... threshold, sensibility, attack are term often used for it... since I don't know that particuliar pedal personnally I can't really help you about settings... if you got this pedal new the manual should point you in the right direction.
Generally you set up 2 key parameter on those type of effects the attack that I just talked about, and the depth of the effect(how much of a quack it does) some other have more control over the quack and how it sounds, that's roughly it.

Also note, I've gotten some pretty cool synth - type sounds when I use it AFTER my Proctavia.
