I have a Suhr S1 coming tomorrow. It is as plain Jane as John makes them-all alder-no maple on Basswood cap or fancy figured woods. It is plekked and has the Buzz Feiten system however, which I've never dealt with and it is said they play as well as the fancier models, but talk is cheap. My American Deluxe Strat will become my back up if I bond with the Suhr, but I have to say I really like the Deluxe-nice neck. Anyways, wondering if anyone has experience and comments regarding Suhr guitars.

While I've never played a Suhr myself, I don't recall ever hearing anyone that has, say that they weren't impressed.

Can't comment on The Suhrs but I agree that the American Deluxes have great necks.

Sounds great! Congratulations on the new guitar.

They really are superior guitars. They all play really well. And they sound really good.

I find that they have their own vibe. Same with most of the "Boutique" guys' stuff. Each brand has it's own thing going on. With the Suhr guitars, it seems to strike me as a very "professional" piece of gear. Same as Tom Andersons do. Whereas I find Melancons and Groshes to be more in the "Traditional" camp.

Not that the Suhrs can't do all the classic tones. They do that. But, they also seem to be able to add some new possibilities as well. Also, they feel and respond more like a modern guitar, than a Vintage piece.

I keep playing them, hoping I'll find one that really speaks to me. And yes, they are consistently really top notch. But, each is different. Just as with Fenders, or any other makers. But, the shop I play them at also has Melancons, Tylers, and Andersons. So, the competition is pretty stiff!

I will say, that the Suhrs set up by hand, seem to be better players, to me. However, I usually play a 57 RI Strat, with 11s. With my fingers and fingernails. So, that may be different than some others.

Basically, I could be very happy with any Suhr I've tried. No doubt about it. I think you'll really dig it!

I have a Suhr Classic with an even c slim neck & it plays better than anything I have ever had!!

Great guitar...I am going to change out the v-60's to a lower output pickup, but with regard to playability, they are top notch!

I was wondering about those pick ups, it's got a pair of his V60LP single coils, and a SSV humbucker in the bridge. I haven't even tried it yet, but I tend to like lower output pu's. Never know though, I'm gonna keep an open mind.

I've played some and many other boutique geetars, all are usually nice!
Thing to do is, approach it as a completley different guitar totally, opposed to a "great strat". Hope that makes sense!

I've really bonded with my Suhr. I went shopping for a CS Fender Strat, but ended up trying the Suhrs and Tylers too. The Suhr I ended up with just seemed to have the perfect neck profile for me. The V60LP's don't sound like a vintage Strat, but they are sweet. But like anything, don't buy a guitar just for its name, get one that fits.

First impressions: It's lighter than my Amer. Deluxe. You're right about the V60 pu's NOT being vintage. A bit more output, I haven't really had time to analyze what's going on eq wise but it seems clearer? than your classic vintage strat tone. Useful for more modern and 'fusion' (I hate that term but there you are). The humbucker in the bridge has a powerful and even response and makes it quite a bit more versatile I would think but it takes some getting use to if you are accustomed as am I to having a single coil pu there. I've never owned a Buzz Feiten axe, but man it DOES make an intonation difference and the plekked frets and neck (unfinished) are like buttah. It feels like it needs to be broken in. The humbucker does kick ass, however while pos. number 2 has some quack to it but it's not exactly the classic strat #2 tone, so if you use position 2 a lot you might consider that. Scott's right, it is it's own thing but of course very influenced by the classic Fender Stratocaster obviously. Once I get it played in a bit more I think this will work real well for me. At the same time, I thank God for giving us an assortment of guitars that are available because sometimes you want classic tones and this as it sits ain't it. My Amer. Deluxe (which I have new found respect for as a production line guitar, because although I've played many Deluxes that I can't say this about-this particular transparent teal beauty holds it's own with the Suhr in many ways)even with the noiseless stock pick ups has a bit more of the classic strat tone we've come to know and mostly love. Make no mistake about it though, the Suhr is definitely a class above for the even frets, flawless intonation, and general attention to detail that would only be equaled by the Fender custom shop and not the production line guitar even if you got lucky. Thumbs up as long as you know what it is and isn't.

Spot on. I've played a few Suhrs. I would definitely take a Suhr over a production Strat, but I'll take a Custom Shop Strat over a Suhr because I want the classic tone and feel. In quality, I think they are similar. And I'm thinking they both offer the same options if you are willing to order and wait. But Suhr seems to be focusing on a more high end modern product, while Fender Custom is focusing on high end classic clones. It just depends on what you prefer, and what you can find to buy.

jaydee,

Sounds like you're pretty happy with the Suhr! They sure are sweet.

So, we agree on the "modern" (for lack of a better word) vibe? Yeah, definately a professional piece of gear. Please let us know how you feel about it, as you two become better acquainted.

Now, what's your favorite Tube Screamer Clone? LOL
