Question for any PSA-1 owners. Been thinking of getting one of these. Currently playing a J-station. It is fine for what it is, but realy not happy with it's Marshall tones. I have heard good things about the PSA, but that it is noisy on high-gain. Do any of you use a noise suppressor in the effects loop? Does it solve the problem for the most part? Thanks for any replies.

I'm a PSA-1 user, true there's some noise with high gain settings. If you can try the preset 24("mesa boogie rectifier" if not mistaking) to see what this means, you should have a better idea after trying one.

As for hooking a noise suppresor in the fx loop I never had the need to try that... true there's some noise but much less than an actual amp at least that's what I've found.

I'd have to try hooking up my Ibanez NB-10 Noise Buster and see if it solves this. I'll try that this week-end.

Wink

Thanks Glorbz. Are you familiar with Michael Schenker? I know that there is a preset in the PSA-1 of him. Tech21's sound files are too brief to make a good judgement. I love his sound and was wondering if it can do a good recreation of it i.e - cranked jcm800 2205. Thanks and all replies are welcome since I am having a hard time finding one to demo.

Ok I tried the noise buster in the fx loop to see if it helps ...

it does cuts out noise, but it doesn't feel natural with it(at least to me, maybe I'm just too used to do without) I think some of the weird feeling I get might be due to level... since I don't think a pedal noise killer is expecting line level but more of a instrument level...

Anyhow it does help dealing with noise, but if you set it too hard you end up losing highs (which is something I expected)

For the Schenker preset(#3)... I'm not an expert on his tone but I'll tell you my impressions of this sound...

It sounds to me like a cranked marshall with a crybaby wah stocked in the low mid part of the range... there's some sort of low mid thing to it... at least that's what I feel.

Just so you know, I used an Ibanez RG with bridge pickup to test this(DiMarzio PafPro) PSA-1 -> Crest power amp -> Marshall 4x12" cab.

I hope this helps a bit.

Thanks for the info Glorbz. I really appreciate it. Will have to try to find a PSA-1 to play on. I do believe it is quality stuff. Played on it once, but it was connected to a Mesa 2:90 and did not sound right. Heard you need a solid state amp. I am planning on a mixer setup. Probably would like to even play with both the J-station and PSA-1 for a dual sound. Again thank you for your response.

Glorbz, can you stand one more question? Have you ever went direct to mixer with the xlr outputs? Is it the same sound as going to a power amp? Happy Trails Bud.

Sure I've used the xlr direct to mixer!

It sounds great that way also, it's usefull to play along some drumbox or a sequencer or whatever...

Still if you plan on using it through a mixer to use headphones... I personally hate headphones with a passion when it comes to playing guitar. Still mixer into some speakers is better than through headphones, but that's me.

But live or in jams, it's great and easy to just plug into a mixer... live you can even split one xlr to power amp and speaker and one to the mixer... so no mics required, of course you gotta live with mono.

Hey Glorbz, I would only use the headphones late at nite and monitors during the day. Glad to hear straight to mixer sounds good. Always heard whether the PSA-1 or the JMP-1, that people are trying to warm up the sound first going thru a tube amp. Rock on.
