I would seek out some nos 7025 tubes. They aren't that expensive, and they are what the amp originally came with. Compared to a 12ax7, they are much quieter with more treble bite.

I suggest 5751s. Sovtek make one and then there's NOS GE's. They are about 60% of the gain of an ax7 and give the amp a great chime and clarity.

ASk Lord Valve in Denver.[ google search will reveal his email and phone ]

the tube guru of gurus

He will tell you about the tubes that get all the hype that don't get the tone

He will tell you about some tubes that get the hype that deserve the rep

He will tell you about tubes that aren't hyped that sound really good and are resonably priced.

His testing/sourcing is a gold mine for people like us, and it doesn't cost any extra to get it!

For more dirt, try a 12ax7 in the phase inverter spot. For less gain and a nice brown sound, try a GE green label 5751.

Lenny Breau is greatest guitarist ever.

Hendrix, call lord valve man. I got my tubes this week and I swear, he knows his shit, my 68 deluxe sounds amazing now. I hate chinese tubes, I told LV this, but, I decided that he sees and sells alot more tubes in a day than I use in 3 years, so I went with his suggestions. Chinese NOS grey plates with philips and mullard at7s(has 2 in a deluxe)

I'm sure he'll set you up with the grey plates or the silver specials. they are great tubes.
