Hey everyone,
I'm going to start a my new project of putting together a flying V. I like Warmoth so I will be buying the body and neck from them - unless someone knows of a better company ...

What I can't decide is what body wood to go with. I really like Alder, but I was wondering about Korina. Does anyone know how Korina would sound different than Alder ?
Appearance will not matter since it will be painted.

Also, does anyone know if Alder sounds as good with hums as it does with s/coils ?

Thanks

korina was/is a Gibson marketing/trade name for "African Limba," which is a mahogany variant. some consider it the best tone wood to build a guitar with as it is purported to be both light in weight and very resonant. and yes, a korina body will sound different than alder. but which is better only you and your ears can decide.

if you do a google search you'll find loads of sites with good info about tone woods, and there are several about "korina" as well. also do a google groups search for korina as there are lots of interesting posts about it.

I have a mid seventies Ibanez lawsuit flying V. Korina sounds great, really cuts, still very balanced. Forget the alder.

Okay, I did a little research, and I'm really leaning towards black Korina (Limba).

I figure a maple neck with Brazillian rosewood f/board with the Korina V should produce a nice thick but bright, articulate sound.

if you're going to go with the black limba, then you might want to consider going with an ebony fingerboard for that "classic" gibson sound and feel.

Will ebony on maple be a suitable combination ?

I figuered since the Korina will be a bit brighter than mahogany and the maple neck will add some brightness - I thought that ebony might not dampen enough highs. What do you think about pau ferro ?
