I just bought a 82 JCM 800 slant cab for my 84 2204.It has the 75 watt Celestion speakers.I'm not sure I'm digging these speakers.Anyone like them and care to share any tips to get them to sound right? They seem a little stiff and the mids are some what scooped. They also make my amp sound LOUD.

Maybe try running your mids a little hotter. They are geared a little more toward the hard rock sound so they may just not be your thing. I would actually think these will be a little more quiet than say a V30. If you are not used to a 4x12 then it will be louder than a 2x12 or 1x12, you are pushin some more air.

i have a 1960 reissue straight cab(i like the bottom end) (current reissue got it about december of last year) with 75s in it, i cant wait until i can afford to replace these speakers, unfortunately theres not alot of resale value on 75s it seems to be on ebay, anyways i dont want to be a thread thief but id like to ask about jbls or ev and how smooth are they in a guitar cab? would be i better off just buying a set of vintage 35s?

not original LLC, the other one! you dig? dont forget to pet my constipated duck.

I hear good stuff on Warehouse Speakers.. and they're cheap. Prolly the GFS or Hohner of Speakers.

Celestion has sound samples on their site. This will at least give you a bit of an idea how they compare. http://professional.celestion.com/guitar/features/tone/index.asp

I plug my 76' 2204 in a 212 avatar cab (v30 and G12H30 ) with good results. However, it doesn't cut through the mix, in a band context, as much as the 412 with 75w speakers.

I may get a quad a greenbacks. The 75's sound good but remind me a little of some of the 80's HR and metal tones.I'm going for a warmer tone.

Billy, maybe a mix of 2 65W Weber Blue Dogs and 2 65W AlNICO Weber Silverbells could help?

I really dig your Vox tone and I was thinking maybe a combination of ceramic and alnico speakers from Weber or Celestion or any similar maker would be the ticket with a 2204 Marshall head.

Yeah, you want to get rid of those 75s, they're stiff and ice-picky and not so good at all. For that classic Marshall sound, get a quad of the G12Hs. They'll probably double the weight of the cab, but it's worth it.

Give me great tone or give me deaf!

honestly sir with the way you play guitar you probably could sound great out of anything. I love Marshall amps. Had the same head since I began playing. Thats over 20 years. I think it is the ultimate building block. When I hear the chet gatton coming out of you the Marshall doesn't come to mind as first choice. You seem more of a fender clean and less of a wind cries mary clean. If that makes any sense. Thus leading to the question of why you choose a 2204 to begin with? As far as griping about spending a grand for your tone. I can sympathize, however I bet you spend more in smaller increments over time on the great tone exploration. I say if something is pushing you in a new tone direction. Do it up right and then decide. Also I have found when I'm tone searching that I often get my head into the tone rather than what im trying to say on the guitar. Whenever I get in the zone I seem to really use the tones and hear them for what they are. This is the experience im usually chasing after when I think I need a tone quest. More often than not it isn't the gear that needed the change. So why did you pick up that Marshall bud? Good luck to you and thanks for sharing your video. I'm not a big fan of the style but I can always appreciate someone tearing it up.

Thanks for the kind words.I love rockin' and the JCM800 just works for the harder edge stuff.I'd love to hear 4 Golds in a 4x12 but dayum that's a lot of cake.I may go with Greenbacks because they lower the dbs.The 2204 is freakin' loud.My amp starts to wake up with the volume at 12:00 and that can be devastating.I'm not really a Fender guy.I've been using EL84/34's for as long as I can remember.

One last thing. Something I did about a year ago and still like- was THD Yellow Jackets. My 79 JMP head is nearly identical to an 800. I put the Yellow Jackets in and turned it from a 50w AB to a 20w class A amp. It really helped me get that club level tone at practices and brought out a new tone in my amp. It is a little different now. Kinda sounds like a VOX. I think before you mess with speakers or anything I would look into this. YMMV
