I can't just lay back and groove on this rainy day so I decided to try out this powder coating system that I bought months ago.

I have some vintage wahs that are need of help so I striped them down to the metal and then powder coated them in a mirrored powder coat.

Once powder coated they get heated to 400 degrees in a cheap toaster over.

While the shell is heating in the over I am testing the component values of each cap, resistor as well as the transistors.

I decided to replace the inductor with two stack of dime inductors, new jacks, new pot, true bypass switching and other board tweaks.

I pull the shell out of the oven and let cool. Once cooled I re glue the Cry Baby badge back on to the shell and have something that looks like this.

So far so good. I re attached the rubber to the foot rocker and I am now waiting for the glue to dry.

More pix to follow.

Dang George, that is one slick looking wah. I love the glossy black finish. Knowing your stuff, I bet it sounds killer too.

Cool stuff...George, did you replace one inductor with two inductors? If so, what is the advantage to doing this? I've never heard of that before...

Hi,

The powder coating system is made by Caswell.
Here is their link
http://www.caswellplating.com/powder/powder_coat.htm

With two inductors you can get to much deeper wah tones. I wire up using a toggle so you have the choice. Using two you can get to 1 Henry instead of the standard 500MH. While this is not for everybody it sounds really cool when playing through a clean amp and the wah by itself.

Here is a pic of reinstalling the parts back into the wah.

I decided to replace the standard large rectangular board with the TDK inductor for a vintage small square board with the Film Can inductor.

Here is a pic of original with TDK inductor circa 1974

Here is a pic of Film Can circa 1969

Here is Clyde McCoy pic with it's Halo inductor

Kind of looks like the 69' and the Clyde only vary by the inductor used. Since layout has a lot to do with the sound of a pedal I often wonder why nobody copied this layout. It appears like they wanted to clean up the wiring and brought all connections into a nice neat row. Notice how 74' resembles newer wahs except the newer ones use the plastic plug in connectors.

OK, here is more or less what these wahs will end up looking like.

The King Vox is nearly completed while the Crybaby is not.

I will record some clips later on in the week.

Regards,
George
