Do you want your OD sound to be phased, or your phased sound to be OD'd? That should answer the placement question

Yeah, I guess so! Clean it doesn't matter I suppose. The OD thing is the question. Now I'm thinking EVH, and which conspiracy theory you believe about his setup - If it was Marshall > Load box > FX , then it would be after. Or if it was a cranked marshall, then it would be before...

I'd put a phasor before the amp (no matter if you are using the amp for gain or not) but AFTER OD/Dist pedals. That's where I have the best luck.
OTOH - I put my Univibe BEFORE my OD/Dist/Fuzz pedals. It just seems happier there.

As I see it, there is no way EVH could have had his phaser anywhere but before the amp. If a phaser is used after a "gain stage", it takes over the whole sound. But EVH's phase just hangs out in the shadows, and that's exactly what you get with the phaser out front. When I play EVH 90 --> EMMA --> Line 6 Delay --> Holy Grail, I get an amazing Eruption tone. It sounds just like the recording (except for the playing . . .). RD

I know that EVH used his Flanger after the load box. I have read that he used his P90 both in front of the amp and after the load box. I use my Phase after my OD's but in front of a dirty amp.

One must remember that EVH didn't use a load box for the first few albums/tours. He used his pedals straight into the Marshall. Once he got his Bradshaw system/rack, was when he started using his amps more like preamps, then into his FX, and then out to SOLID STATE H&H power amps.

Actually, I heard it was the load box on VH1 and then just a cranked Marshall on VHII, hence the difference in tones from one to the other.

You can really tell the tunes that he used the Flange after the amp. Unchained is one that comes to mind. The only way I can get that sound with my Flange is if I run an OD pretty hot in front of it otherwise the effect is too subtle. For the most part the Phase I think he ran in front of the amp, because the effect is pretty subtle. At least that is my take on it using a P90 and a 71 Super Lead. More of a tone shaper than an actual effect.

I'm not really sure what kind of load boxes were around in '78?? Palmer didn't start getting big until the 80's. EVH did use the Variac back then, but no load box. He only had the one Marshall, and didn't use any slave/poweramps with it. (until later) I read an interview where Eddie says that his pedalboard for the first three tours was a piece of plywood with the Phase 90, MXR Flanger, and the Univox echo in the bomb shell. That's the live setup, but who knows what may have been done in the studio for FX. Head
