The new EVH model. The Phase 90 is one of my all time favs. Always wished I didn't have to use a special true-bypass box with it though...
Does the new one have a true-bypass switch? Any other Phase 90-like pedals with TB that you would recommend?? |

According to MXR, the new pedals (ie EVH Phase 90, Zakk Overdrive, Dime distortion, etc) are all "hardwire Bypass".
Here's the explanation that I have about the various bypasses that puts things pretty simply for me: a) Buffers are used by companies like Boss, Ibanez, Tech21, Dunlop. etc. They consist of an active (powered) circuit in parallel with the effect circuit. When in bypass, the signal goes through this active circuit. b) In "hardwire bypass" the input is directly connected to the output of the pedal, but the input of the effect circuit is still connected to the bypassed guitar path, causing pickup volume and impedance drop. This becomes a more serious problem as the number of pedals (this type of bypass) increases. This system is used by Marshall, Jim Dunlop(Crybaby), MXR, early Electro Harmonix etc.... c) In the "true bypass" system, through a spetial kind of switching, the clean signal goes around the effect signal completely. The effect cannot influence the signal because it is physically isolated. T. Miranda effects use "true bypass" switching system exclusively. I own, and love, the new EVH Phase 90; and have not noticed any tone suckage or loss of highs, etc., but I have nearly all True Bypass pedals around it. It's a great sounding pedal and I'm glad I got it. Just my .02 worth. |

quote: Thanks for the info! Now I understand all that jargon. So, how does the new Phase 90 compare to the regular reissue Phase 90 or to an old script model for instance. I like this one but keep it in a true-bypass loop. One interesting thing which actually works well for me is the boost when the Phase 90 is on. It is an audible boosting of the guitar signal. Good for making the effect stick out. Bad for overdriving the input of some pedals. I have it going into a Dano Tuna Melt Trem which tames it right back down. BTW: I have only true-bypass, boutique pedals except for the Phase 90 and Tuna Melt Trem -- both of which are awesome at what they do, seriously!! |
