on sunday i returned home w/ my newly "restored" '70 Deluxe and read the GT rant/discussion with much chagrin: i took my amp to a guy i don't know all that well here in brooklyn (i won't name names, but the owner's attitude left a lot to be desired..) and sighed at the presence of GT tubes where a pair of Hytrons sat prior to its meltdown.
nonetheless, i usually buy from mike at KCA, and i'm considering a pair of Brimar 6V6s to replace the crappy GTs that now darken my doorstep. anyone have experience with these tubes, or another vendor? mike seems like a real nice guy, and i've loved his tubes so far, but i'm always open to suggestion.
just as i began typing, guitar in lap, my amp began making awful farty noises could it be the GTs have begun their evil magik!?
I've been going to a private dealer (thru evilbay--yeah, so shoot me ) but mainly I go to thetubestore.com. I don't fiddle around with the far out, NOS stuff. They just have fast shipping and the brands I dig (JJ TESLA & SVETLANAS) w/good prices...
I usually buy from Bob at Eurotubes..great guy, helpful and speedy. But now I'm in KT66 land and JJ doesn't make a KT66 -- so what are the respected KT66 brands out there? And where to buy them?
KCA, Tubestore.com and Lord Valve. I called Doug at Doug's Tubes today to order a few, but what a pain in the ass. He was out walking around the first time I called around lunchtime and he said he'd call me back in 1 1/2 hours. He did call later and we started discussing some tubes and what I needed, but we were interrupted because he was called into a meeting. He said he would call back, but here it is at 10:20 pm, no call, and no order placed. Guess I'll check out the Tubestore when I get done here....

Sorry! Just re-read my last note and I didn't mean for it to sound like I was insinuating that Doug was a pain in the ass! On the contrary, he tried to be as helpful as he could. I was referring to the process of trying to get the order completed with all the interruptions and delays.

I usually get My tubes from Doug by email. He screens them and sends them real fast. As a rule I've found that I like to do business with People I can talk to directly and Doug emails back pretty quick.

I've used doug at doug's tubes and Mike at KCA (www.kcanostubes.com) and both provided top notch products and service. I have also used Cold Spring Electrical works (advertises in VG, not online) without issue. Last, Myles Rose has a wonderfull reference section on Tube suppliers at his site. http://www.guitaramplifierblueprinting.com/

I put a pair of Brimar 6V6 which I got from KCA in my SF Deluxe Reverb and they're working very nicely after over a year of home and stage use.
I also have an old Silvertone 1472 (similar circuit to a Tweed Deluxe) and I put a pair of Mazda 6V6 which I got for a very fair price from www.tubesandmore.com ... they're working very nicely too ... it seems like the Mazda's might bit crunchier than the Brimars which are smoother (very subtle differences).
