Turtle,
I heard the flange was really good, but I have not played one of these. Supposed to mimic Jimi's "House burning down tone". Just the word I've heard..

I'm not sure about the flanger, but the chorus is pretty good. I think EJ's "High Landrons" was another inspiration for the flanger part of the CF-1. My buddy loves his CF-1. I opted for the DLS chorus~Vib, which Teddy advised was a bit more transp . . . uh, clear sounding in the chorus dept.

The ChoralFlange has been permanent fixture on my pedal board since they first came out. The chorus section will do the transparent chorus better than the TC, can get almost as lush and wet as a Boss CE-1 and can cover a whole lot of ground inbetween. The flanger section is not as trippy as a dedicated flanger (such as the FoxRox TZF, MXR or Ada) but it is useable (which the TC isn't). I think what turns most people off is that they never figure out how to use it: it has 5 knobs and two toggle swithces so it's not your fathers chorus. Some others I've tried along the way:
AnalogMan Clone Chorus: Ok, but the ChoralFlange will do everything the Clone will and a whole lot more. I've tried twice with the Clone; close but no cigar.

Boss CE-1. The king of lush, underwater, warm chorus. Big, AC only, not true bypass and not near as versatile. The tremolo section does a killer leslie sim.

Voodoo Lab Chorus. Hissssssssssss

Jacques Meistersinger. Killer bang for the buck. The only other chorus I've hung onto.

Is it you or the equipment?

I currently have a Choralflange and a TZF. The TZF is the best flanger I've used. I'm keeping the Choralflange for the chorus. I think for the price the Choralflange is good but it certainly is nice to have a dedicated flanger and chorus.

I've had my Choralflange for 6 months or so and I'm really digging it! As far as flanging goes the only thing I can compare it to is my old TC chorus and the Choralflange beats it easily. In fact my TC chorus has been on the shelf ever since I got the CF!

Had a Choralflange for about a year and a half. Very nice, very transparent sound, but can also get pretty thick and warm, but in a different way than the Boss CE series to my ears. Does a very good "fast Leslie" also, not quite as thick and complex as a Roto Shpere (in a side by side comparison between it, a Roto Shpere and a short Leslie cabinet-1 set of rotory horns), but pretty close, and a bit more "lifelike" than the Deja Vibe (a different but cool sound also).

I tend to use it in a very transparent, light shimmery setting myself. You don't really notice it till you turn it off. Have only used the flange in a fast rotating "swishy" thing. Doesn't give you "jet engine."

I'm real happy with mine! Don't dare try it on the acoustic, otherwise, I might have to get another one. . .

I strongly regret buying my Choralflange.

The pedal makes a squeaking noise in Flange mode, set to 'Wide', Delay below 9:00, Depth and Rate around 2:00 and [pedal's] Vol. not maxed. Not only exactly on those settings, but in a range around them where I think the pedal sounds best. As soon as you stop playing notes, the squeaking starts in. UNUSEABLE.

Fulltone has been the biggest prick about it I've ever encountered. I've owned 6 Fulltone pedals and have had problems with three now. This compares to me having owned 7 Boss pedals in my life and never having a single problem with any of them. Of course the sound quality is different, but in my experience Fulltone products are not perfectly reliable. There's a signifigant chance you will require customer service. If you do require customer service, there's a significant chance your experience will be a very unpleasant one. Of course many times his "service" goes smoothly, but you couldn't pay me to get "serviced" by Fuller again. The joke is, though, that I paid him for the privledge (by buying his expensive pedal in the first place).

Since you're asking for advice, I'd say don't do it - particularly for the Flanger.

DMT - I tried your setting on my ChoralFlange and it sounded fine. Infact, I think the ChoralFlange is one of those rare pedals that's useable in just about every setting (well almost every setting). Try a vintage MRX or Ada and there are LOTS of unuseable settings imho unless you're into flaying saucer oscilations, psuedo steel drums, out of tune warbles and swoops, or wierd ambience noises that sound like you're playing a sitar inside a metal gymnasium (some people dig that stuff!).

My experience with Mike Fuller have been nothing but positive. He's aswered all of my emails promptly, given me some suggestions on DIY projects, and shipped things I've ordered promptly.

I've owned the ChoralFlange, every version of the FD2, the 69 and Soul Bender and not had a problem with any of them.

Is it you or the equipment?

I have 8 or 9 Fulltone pedals -- never a problem. When I made an observation about a quirk (not a malfunction) in the tone of the Distortion Pro (and it was just a personal thing), Mike went FAR beyond the extra mile to resolve it. I would never have a qualm about buying Fulltone.

On the flanger part of ... what Trebor said.

On the chorus part, there are others. I still use my CE-1 and CE-2 ... still prefer the TC for that hi-fi thingie .. just my .02

Exactly. The same settings work fine on my friend's pedal. There's a problem with my pedal, but Fuller won't own up to it. Instead, he accused me of various things. Unbelievable.

Besides being aggressive and insulting to me [his customer], my pedal was already in his possession during which time he "fixed" the wrong problem (because he didn't listen, but instead fixed what he "knew" [wrongly] was the problem). When his error was made clear, he accused me of having messed with the internal trimmers and stopped answering email! That's the worst kind of warranty service I've ever encountered in my life: Manufacture a pedal with a problem, receive it for service and do a standard upgrade instead of fixing the described problem, accuse the owner of causing the problem (based on no evidence except that the manufacturer couldn't possibly make an error), then hope the problem goes away! Unacceptable. And this was the most expensive pedal I've ever bought. Frown

Like I said, I regret ever buying a Choralflange. How does this effect anyone else? well, it happened. It's just another piece of info to consider when you're making a purchase, especially an expensive one. For my money, there's a lot better guys out there making quality, interesting effects and that are concerned about their reputation (or simply concerned about maintaining their high personal standards). Pleasant people that are a pleasure to do business with.

I've found Mr. Fuller to be unpleasant (no, I wasn't trying to be his friend, or calling him up on the phone to chat, etc.) and now unreliable.

Rant mode off.

I have to respectfully disagree with Trebor in that the CF will do the transparent chorus thing better than the TC. I have both, and the CF is a far more versatile box, and I agree with all that Bob said regarding the flange. However the TC has a very clear high end to my ears, and the CF just sounds thicker and more colored in my opinion. TC's still my fave for that sound.

Clone Chorus has sort of a flangey type thing, and is just worlds away from the tone of CE-1's, CF's, and Voodoo Analog choruses... Nothing really simulates a Leslie, but to me the phasier sounding choruses get more in that ballpark... but the Clone Chorus has a fast rate modulated sound all its own... I still dig the noisy Voodoo for mono Leslie in a small box, but really like the Clone's fast rate modulations, and next in line would be Arion Fat Chorus, followed by the ChoralFlange and the TC.

The only thing that would make me shy away from the choralflange is that you have to set the controls and put it in either flange or chorus, not like you have both at the ready all the time. That's why I prefer seperate units. (Voodoo analog chorus and 70's MXR Flanger)
