I've never owned a Full-Drive (in Goldmember's voice: "isn't that wierd"), so I can't comment on that part of your query, but I bought a Blues Devil and a Tour Pro here on the toyz site from Teddy. In case you didn't know, the Tour Pro is one of the toggle settings on the TTS and w/o the boost/comp switch. Same overdrive circuit inside, without the extra options.
Anyway, the Blues Devil is absolutely one of the best sounding TS808-type pedals I have ever used. All the oft heard comments about the pedal (the "note bloom" you get when sustaining a note, the 808 kind of presence and growl, etc.) are true. Having owned an original TS808 in the past, I'd say MJM did a great job of copping the circuit (just look inside) and even getting a little more out of it. Classic sound/performance for the price of a TS9 reissue. But there is a bit of bass loss (like the original), which really is quite fine depending on your set-up and how you plan on using the pedal. Sometimes that mid-hump is exactly what is called for in the mix. I am not one of those types who cannot use a pedal because it changes your sound. The Tour Pro (and by extension the TTS, which I have played many times by the way) is a different beast. While it is loosely in the same vein as a TS-type pedal, it has a much larger and amp-like sound all its own. It gets that same bluesy sting and attack that TS pedals get, but with much more girth and power. It can make some TS-type pedals sound anemic when placed side-by-side. It has a sizable volume boost (translates to clean-boost with a slight drive if you wish it), a wider range of gain, a nicely voiced tone knob, and a full thickening of the tone, w/o ever getting flabby. There is no noticeable bass-loss to my ears. The TTS gives you all of the above and more. It'd be nice to switch from the BD for rhythm gtr. to the Tour Pro for lead, though neither pedal is limited to those duties. http://dalakings.com/ |

Hey Moe, another great one !!!! the Question remains - are you cathode or cammode biased ??
But as Cubba alluded too, any one switching from a staight or even modded TS to a TTS or TPro would take about 3 secs to go 'nice!'.... I only know one person that liked the modded TS better..... If they were all free, I would take the TTS then the Bdevil then the FD2 Ohm,Ohm on the range...(8~} |

Used to have a modded FD2 it's smoother sounding and tamer compared to the Blues Devil. I haven't tried the TTS myself (well almost). We'll see what the future brings. Hey Moe how are you?

You know some of these pedal makers need to work on better MP3 samples. I listened to the TTS MP3's and I can't even make it through a few seconds of listening to each one. They make the pedal sound horrible. I would have considered the pedal until I listened to the samples. They would better off not having any samples up; or maybe my ancient ears have a different view of what I want in a pedal. My FD2 sounds WAY better (smoother, less harsh, etc,) than those samples. I know it would likely sound different with my rig, but most don't have that opportunity before purchasing.

It would sound very different Tim with your set-up, I guarantee it !!! Pedal makers are in a tough position when it comes to having samples on their website. You basically have to have something up there to answer the "what does it sound like?" question, but if you dont know how to post samples properly, or have a less than desirable recording set-up ( for example, George's TTS and Tour Pro samples were done on a cassette machine !), it can lead to reactions like yours.
Keep in mind, most (if not all) boutique builders are guys who have full-time day jobs and do this out of love, fame, or a coupla' bucks in their pocket. But I know whatcha' mean, it can be a turn-off if the samples are the only means you have to hear the thing. It doesnt help that most internet audio is packaged via mp3, which is a way less than desirable medium, but maybe the only popular and accessible option we have until the avg. connection speeds increase. If I had a pedal building site (that is if I actually didnt have two ham-hocks for hands and a beetle's brain for electronics), I would have the option of downloading wav. files of my samples, as opposed to just having mp3.s or live streamimg. They are full bandwith and uncompressed. I always right-click on samples and download them onto the desktop so I can listen to them later as well. http://dalakings.com/ |
