Can anyone tell me if David Gilmour is using a silicon or germanium fuzz in the Live at Pompaii DVD. Or realy anytime before 1973. Im pretty sure he switched to a Cornish modded Big Muff after that. Thanks for any help!!!!
If I recall correctly you can actually see two fuzzfaces on Pompeii during the Saucerful of Secrets bit, a red one and a blue one, so I guess he used both Ge and Si.
The tone on the solo on Echoes sounds to me more like Silicon though. On many of the earlier Floyd live bootlegs (and even on albums like Obscured by clouds) his overall sound seems very trebley ... and his fuzzface tones retain that edge with great sustain, so I guess he very likely was using a Silicon fuzz for a lot of stuff. If you listen closely to the solo on Echoes from Pompeii (one of my top 5 Glimour tones) the sound is actually very sharp but it has that singing quality due to the delay from the Binson unit and the sheer volume he was using.
I think he began using the Big Muff on as late a time as the Animals tour ...
I didnt notice two Fuzzfaces there. I guess blue fuzzfaces are silicon? That is my all time favoret guitar tone. Echos on the Pompaii DVD is what my idea of good tone is. Thanks for the reply. Iv got a Fulltone 70' pedal comeing, so I got the Si fuzz covered. Now maybe I can sell a kidney for a Hi-Watt.........
I'll have to watch it again to be 100% sure that there are two fuzzfaces ... I think one of them is not sitting on the ground but on top of something ...
About the red & blue thing I really don't know for sure which is which or if they were actually classified by colour ... then you also have fuzzfaces that were grey. Based on sound alone what he mainly used sounds more Silicon than Germanium.
I got in the ballpark of early Gilmour tones with my '70, an Echomachine and my Deluxe Reverb. The '70 into my JTM-45 clone gets too creamy for Gilmour ...
there were two Fuzz Faces, but from what I remember only the blue one was being used. The red was sitting by the drums. the heat was probably driving the GE trannys crazy =>
Good point about the heat Raoul_Duke and thanks agin to Shakkal for all the info. Now I just need to wait for the Fulltone 70' to arrive (it will be here tuesday). I cant wait to try this fuzz out. I LOVE my 69' so I have high hopes for the 70'.
Well the 70' Pedal arrived and Iv put it to the test for a few hours. I can just about nail the Gilmour tone with this pedal. Im just in love with it. I run the 70' to a EH deluxe Memory Man to a EH Holy Grail reverb into my Traynor YCV-40WR. What a tone. Not Perfect gilmour tone, but its now my tone.
I recently received my Hi Octone from Retroman half Sybil/half Octavious and it's really great tonally. The Sybil side cleans up real nice and unlike other Germanium fuzzes it works well in all pup positions.
