I'm a believer in simple setup, but I'm also an experimentor type of player so... I end up using a basic setup to wich I ad up upon experimenting needs.

I can survive playing a guitar straight into an amp and I won't complain about it as long as I can play Wink

I like having the ability to make all sorts of strange noises, but usually I only opt for a single overdive pedal and maybe a wah and/or a delay. My current setup is a tele into a Tesse RMC3, Fulldrive 2, SIB Echodrive, DC-30. It seems to work and doesn't kill my tone since it is all true bypass. I used to have a huge pedalboard with a bunch of pedals but I never used most of them and when something went wrong I never knew where to start. Good luck.

I alaways have delay (Maxon AD-80)in the effects loop and then usually just some kind of OD,Wah,Trem, and or modulation effect into the front end of the amp.It depends on the gig and my mood.I have a ton of crap to choose from but I like to keep it fairly simple.

i am an effects junkie and i am damn proud of it. i making complex sounds. my first pedal was an overdive but i traded it a week after i got it for a flanger and a wah. i dove right in and have not come up for air since. i still enjoy a basic setup and really like playing my acoustic, i just prefer adding extra texture to my sound. if effects are used correctly (play it straight and then apply effects) you'll be ok.

I have 5 pedals in my set-up :
Big muff/Micro Synth/Whammy II/Space Station/
Memory Man split into a Roland JC 120 and a '64 Fender Showman.
I also have the chorus button on the Roland set-up for some dry/wet mix.
I find I only use these pedals for one sound each. I am finding more colors in the tube amp, so I may add an overdrive to have a clean and dirty set-up at the same time.
I think pedals are cool but can be overused and often kill great tone. I have a Vox Tube loop buffer that fattens the sound and cleans up the noise. i think I've found my dream set-up. Geez, that only took 10 years and a lot of $$$$!

OK, look. Here's how you get a good distorted sound in a manner appropriate for an intelligent lifeform. First, buy an old, non-master, low-wattage amp. I use a blackface deluxe reverb. If you play blues, simply turn it up until it distorts. Turn down your guitar volume a bit for cleaner sounds. If it's too loud, then buy an attenuator (but don't turn it down past -12db or you'll lose tone). If it's not loud enough, then buy a shure SM-57 and mike the amp. Simple.

If you need a hotter lead sound, then stick an overdrive box in front of the amp and balance its output appropriately with your clean sound. Get a box with true bypass to enjoy that vintage clean sound. I use a Tubester.

Unless you're one of those little metalhead brats, this, or something like it, should work fine for you.

I have fun with effects, but find that I can create the most variation in my sound with 10 things- my fingers. Nothing beats creativity. Aside from distortion, I think a lot of times effects just get in the way and color tone. However, every once in a while I can get inspiration from some sonic glitch from effects. I tend to like time-based effects, a.k.a. tremolo or delay.

I LOVE PEDALS of all sorts!!!!!!!!!
I currently have;
Boss DS-1 Distortion
Boss BD-2 Blues Driver
Boss BF-2 Flanger
Boss PH-2 Super Phaser
Boss CE-5 Chorus Ensemble
Ibanez DL-10 Digital Delay
I'm hoping to buy a
Boss HR-2 Harmonist
cause thats a fudged up pedal.

I couldn't live without my effects.
Allthough if i could only keep one, it would be my DS-1.
