I found one of these locally. Anyone have any experience with these and know what the going rate is. I actually called Elderly's and checked Ebay but want some other opinions.
This is exactly what it is

That one went for more than I have been told what they normally go for but I guess anything is worth whatever you can get out of it. I know I can get it at least for $1000 but would like to go at least a couple hundred lower.

Any thoughts?

A clean one with case and everything original is going to be close to $2000 now. If you can get a nice one for $1000, BUY IT NOW! 70's Gibsons have started climbing in the last year or two. You won't lose on the deal.

Good Luck!

H

If you get the chance to play it and it has "mojo" then be willing to pay a bit more for it.

In my experience some guitars just have "it" regardless of their pedigree or alleged pedigree.

I was recently in a shop and tried out a couple of older guitars. One was a 1961 Les Paul SG Special with P-90s, really nice, and the other was a Yamaha SG-800 from the eighties, equally as nice if not a bit nicer. Unfortunately the Yamaha was not for sale, but had cost its owner a fraction of what the Les Paul was worth. go figure.

It does hae the original case. The only thing not original is the tuners. It is a pawn shop and I did pick it up and play it and it played very well, I haven't plugged it into an amp yet but they don't really have any decent amps but I at least can see if everything works. I am going to go look at it again tonight if it is still there.

Well I pulled the trigger. They wanted $1300 but I got it for $850 out the door. It plays great, super low action. It is pretty clean for a 34 year old guitar. Everything is original except the tuners. The pots even work great. I was expecting scratchy pots at least but everything works great.

F'YOU! Mad...no seriously, GREAT SCORE!!!!
can't go wrong, if it's got the mojo for you it's one of those pawn shop prizes that we all dream of finding...if not, you flip it for double and move on with extra scratch for the next "perfect" guitar... Big Grin

I was excited to see this guitar on your post. I have this exact same guitar! I bought mine about eight yrs ago for $950.
You may know this already but there were only around 1200 of these made and shipped in 1974. If I remember right, these were the only ones with the badass bridge. After 1974 they went to a tune-o-matic type bridge and tailpiece. They were discontinued in 1979. There really are not that many around. Mine had the original tuners, but somebody had put an LP Standard pickguard and mismatched plate covers on the back. I ordered some pickguard material and put everything back to original. Sure, it's not as valuable as it would be if it was all original, but it's still the best freakin' guitar in my arsenal!!! How are you diggin' those P90's? AWESOME aren't they!
You gotta love that neck, too!
Anyway, congratulations for getting your hands on this guitar. Never let it go!

Sweeeet. P 90's are the only way to go in a LP Special. You scored big time.

I won't piss you off by telling you how little I paid for this guy in the early 90's - bridge and jack plate aren't original, missing pickguard, a lot of belt buckle wear too.

One of my best axes for sure!
You got a GREAT guitar!

Check Ebay. Last night I seen someone had an original 70's pickguard for your guitar I believe it was NOS.

Thanks for the info Axeman. I wasn't aware of how many were made. It is a cool guitar and sounds cool as well. I do need to possibly get some new saddles as the ones on it have several grooves and after I put new strings on it I had a hard time getting the spacing right. I still need to work a little on getting the intonation a bit better but it is a great playing guitar.

Southside Guitars Brooklyn sells a bunch of vintage gear and most is in amazing condition and thus their prices are a bit higher.

Sounds like you scored that guitar at a great price Dos! So, how does it play and sound?
It sure looks good! Smile

Anybody remember what they sold for new?

Regards,
George

It sounds and plays great George. It probably has lower action than about anything else I own. It is my first P90 guitar so I don't have anything else to compare it with but it is a cool new sound in the arsenal.
