I'm looking at buying a Vox V15 amp tomorrow for $600 .... I have to drive 3 hours to check it out... Has anyone ever played one or know anything about them? What can I expect? It's supposed to sound like a smaller AC30 but different from a AC15...
Good reviews on HC http://www.harmony-central.com/Guitar/Data/Vox/V15-01.html thanks for any thoughts or info! |

Thats what I have , it the same exact width as a Deluxe Reverb and I stack the V15 on top of t he DR, excellent combo......
The V15 is solid state rectifier which I prefer as the bottom end is tighter than the ac15 and its 2x10s rather than 12's so it is voxy but really its own animal, but they are pretty rare and only made a few years...... It also developed the usuall Vox problems and I had to have it serviced .... but sounded great.... |

quote: donneR.. thanks for the info man! I'm looking forward to checking it out.. Just a few questions if you dont' mind... It's point to point right? How clean does it stay? At what point does it start to break up? What are the usual Vox Problmes? This amp I was told has seen a tech about 4 months ago for a checkup.. So it should be 100% How different does it sound compared to a AC15? better? the same? worst? How does it like pedals? I'm planing on taking my TIM to check it out... It's $600 ...I think this is a good deal..do you? Ri AC15 go for around $750-$800 right? Thanks for all your thoughts!!! This message has been edited. Last edited by: Craise, |

Cool, give a yell if you get it! I finally brought the AC15 home last night, so we can put 'em head to head if you score... I've always wanted to hear that model. Does it have the Fane speakers?

The vox AC15 is a killer amp and $600 is not a bad price. I had 2 at one time and played one clean and one distorted. Does that British thing to a tee, Great amp.

DonneR,
Hey bro, If you could..I would really appreciate any other thoughts on the V15. Corleone brought his AC-15 over for me to check out and take along to compare to the V15. Do you still own the V15? have you compared it to a AC15? I think Corleone's AC-15 Ri sounds great! I'm afraid I'm going to drive 3 hours just to find out I want to buy a AC15! Any thoughts would be helpful... wondering if $600 is to much? thank you sir! |

Hi MM, I have not compared it directly to an AC15...... I would like to hear someone try a SS rectifier in a Vox to tighten up the flabby bottom, Im sure Weber has something appropriote...
Like C said check to see if it has the Fanes - if not you might get the price down some more...... I like both the inputs, I like the normal better its a nice clean..... |

Yup- looks like Fanes - looks like someone peeled the sticker off one to see...might ask them what it says on the sticker under the sticker...... whats nice is on the other side of the wooden back panel is the schematic for the amp... huh huh its says 'whilst'

Well, I just got home from checking out the V15...and
It sucked total ass!!! Very very disappointed... My little 67 VibroChamp (w JBL)would have blown it away.. It was very thin sounding..and not loud at all... Corleone's AC15ri ate it for lunch! It was like night and day. I would say that to me..it sounded like it needed new tubes. So maybe it would fair better with some. But as is..I'm so glad I passed on it! I don't think I would pay even $250 for it...it sounded that bad. thanks guy's for all the info and thoughts!! |

Well being a Brit, to be precise a Scot I used an AC30 from around 1964 till around the late 80's and to be honest I still think they sound awesome as do many Fender amps but I havent played thru an AC15 for about 40 years so I wouldnt really be able to answer you query except to say if it sounds good get one.

thanks for your thoughts guy's..
I think some of you might be misreading my post.. I am/was talking about a "V15" amp not a "AC15" The AC15 Ri that Corleone let me check out..rocks!!! I sounds as a AC15 Vox should.. the V15 is a late 70's early 80's model made by Rose Morris for Vox..it was their take on a AC15 and was only made for 2 or 3 years...and I think it didn't fair well...so they dropped the model.. I can see why..the one I checked out was weak... very thin sounding and low volume. It did have some what of a Vox tone...but even the mighty TIM overdrive couldn't make this amp sound good...to my ears. Which BTW the TIM sounded like God thru the AC15ri ! I think I'm just going to have to get the real deal ..a AC15 thanks again ! |

Well man, I'm sorry the trek was in vain, & the amp in question didn't work out for you... but at least now you know, & plus you enjoyed a leisurely drive to beautiful Alabama without incurring a speeding ticket!
AC15 is tough to beat for pure tone... one of the few amps I've had any success cranking... it remains a whole lot tighter as dimed when compared to an AC30, albeit slightly less dimensional... for an amp with some bells & whistles, all features seem to function pretty well; 'verb is not as lush as BF Fender, & trem is not as deep as brown Fender, but both are cool in their own right... master volume seems to be more effective than most. The AC15 RI prices seem to have climbed since that model was discontinued... but maybe the new VOX line of amps will help to beat prices down a bit... ________________ Tone is in the feet. |

yeah.. Love the AC15... Must resist GAS !!!
thanks for all the info guy's! BTW as you might have noticed I changed my on screen name from Mastermind to Nanookrubsit as I felt like an Ass evertime I posted... Because I couldn't use my own avatar...which would have been a Pic of my favorite game as a kid "Mastermind" and the mastermind name by itself sounds kind of pompous! so Nanook from now on.. in honor of my favorite guitarist Frank Zappa. |

Think I'm going to hold off on the AC15 for one of the new AC30C C1's!! These look sweet! I forgot that me and meterman got to hear the new AC30CCs along with the new marshalls at this summer's NAMM...
They sounded killer! They don't come out till Nov-Dec ...and I've heard the street price will be $800! for the smaller 1x12 AC30C C1 A guy on plexi palace compared one to his AC30TBX and said he like the CC better and that it sounds more like the early JMI 60's Vox amps. Can't wait!! |
