Can anyone explain the differences between the '70 fuzz and the soulbender?
I own the '70 and i'm curious about the low end on the soulbender, how it differs. I have tried the Mcfuzz hot and really like the low end, but i like the sustain of the '70. Any suggestions? |

Hi Heater,
I have both. They are just VERY different critters. I honestly think that the Soul Bender & the 70's are two of Mike's best creations--I doubt I'll ever part with either. The Soul Bender has a very different midrange makeup and is maybe "throater" sounding. They just don't sound anything alike--I'd suggest trying a SB out before you buy. It could be complete magic or you might hate it--depends on what you style is and what tones you are going for. For the really classic Beck/Page and even some early Clapton-ish tones, the Soul Bender is a hard one to beat.... |

Well unlike the '70 the SB has a tone knob, so you can dial in more low-end if you want or go the other way- also the SB doesn't clean up with the volume knob like a '70 does.

Hi,
I also own both, and agree that they are very different. Thay are based on two totally different circuits. The '70 is more of a Hendrix BOG type fuzz. It can be fairly sharp sounding. The Soul Bender, has more gain, and is fatter sounding. I like them both. The '70 seems to work better with an amp that is already starting to break up. It sounds like i need to try one... tour box! kidding!
I picked this '70 pedal up at GC for a good price and was suprised it sounded so good. I guess i have gotten the "tweakers" ear and i'm not satisfied with anything less than a $200+ pedal (snobbery syndrome) I have to admit, i'm already picturing it in a small hammond hand painted box....ha |

I've had the '70 pedal but not the soulbender. I do have 2 mjm original britbenders. I've been curious about the difference between the britbender and the soulbender, since they are both going after the same pedal. Any thoughts?

I've got a Soulbender and McFuzz Hot, only played a '70 in the store. Like everyone said the Soulbender and the silicon fuzzfaces are quite different...the McFuzz hot & '70 will be more similar to each other than to the Soulbender.
I like the SB alot, it's a fat honky fuzz with great cut and lots of gain & sustain. Fun to play, maybe not quite as versatile as it doesn't clean up too well. I'd love to hear both MJM as well to see how they compare. Heater, I don't use my SB much, if you want to try it out for a week shoot me an email |

The soul-bender is my favourite fuzz not because it comes close to the Beck/Truth sound (which is a good thing of course!), but i find it does much more then just that. It can be biting sharp and goed very wel along with a MXR phase 45 into it. After Vox 847 you get instant Pearl Jam-leads. I replaced the 500K volume pot with a 250K to get more volume driving the first stage of my amp into madness if desired. It is a keeper for sure. Haven't played the '70 though.
